  • Introduction & overview

    Open Access•Μαρία Σταματοπούλου, Maria Stamatopoulou•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2018

This brief introduction presents the structure and contents of the current issue of Archaeology in Greece , linking the various contributions to events or very recent discoveries that were reported in the press in the period immediately before the completion of this issue. It also offers an overview (not meant to be exhaustive) of archaeological activity in Greece over the past 12 months, focusing on major exhibitions and new museum openings, imp…

  • Introduction & overview

    Open Access•Μαρία Σταματοπούλου, Maria Stamatopoulou•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2017

Over the past year, Greek archaeology has seen a remarkable number of new publications, both fieldwork data reports ( ADelt vols 65–68 for 2010–2013 in ten fascicules, AEMTh 25 and AEThSE 4, among others) and conference proceedings, exhibition catalogues, monographs and Festschriften that include much new and unpublished material. Regular updates continue to appear in AGOnline , but it has been impossible to process all this material in the space…

  • New museums, exhibitions and site presentations

    Open Access•Μαρία Σταματοπούλου, Maria Stamatopoulou•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2016

Since 2009 Greece has faced one of its most challenging phases in modern history; the financial and social crisis has affected all sectors of society and spending for cultural activities has been significantly cut. Although there have been museum closures and funds for research or even day-to-day needs are in short supply, nevertheless, very serious and creative work is being produced quietly, often with the aid of European Union co-funded projec…

  • Introduction & overview

    Open Access•Μαρία Σταματοπούλου, Maria Stamatopoulou•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2016

Following a ‘remarkable decade of fieldwork’ (Catherine Morgan in AR 59 [2012–2013] 1) and the increasing application of technologically advanced methods in archaeological investigations, emphasis appears now to have shifted from excavation to the analysis of the data collected. The present volume aims to strike a balance between articles that discuss exciting new discoveries (as is customary for the Newsround section and the Director's report of…

  • Thessalians Abroad, the Case of Pharsalos

Maria Stamatopoulou•CHAPTER•Greek and Roman Networks in the…•2013

This chapter examines what the existing evidence shows about Pharsalians in the international arena, the kind of networks they formed with the outside world, and any meaningful trends or differences from other Thessalian cities. Understanding the conduct, modes of self-representation, and self-promotion, and the interaction of Thessalian leading families at a regional and Pan-Hellenic level, might enable to make better sense of Thessalian history…

  • Thessaly (Prehistoric to Roman)

    Open Access•Μαρία Σταματοπούλου, Maria Stamatopoulou•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2013

In this year's report I will focus on the presentation of the proceedings of AEThSE 3 which were distributed in spring 2013. The publication contains many very interesting articles on Thessaly that demonstrate the vitality and variety of the archaeological work (fieldwork, research and archival studies) conducted in the region, often under difficult circumstances. Although it has often been pointed out (during the conferences) that these meetings…

  • Thessalians Abroad, the Case of Pharsalos

    Maria Stamatopoulou•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Historical Review•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 30

This paper examines the evidence (literary, epigraphic, and archaeological) for the presence of Pharsalians outside their territory from the sixth to the first centuries BC and discusses it against the archaeological record from the city, in an attempt to determine what types of links Pharsalians had with the outside world, the types and frequency of these contacts, and the regional and chronological patterns. The peak of Pharsalian connections a…

  • Architecture and Archaeology in the Cyclades

J J Coulton, Μαρία Σταματοπούλου et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHAEOLOGY IN…•2005

9 papers presented at a colloquium held in honour of J.J. Coulton at Lincoln College, Oxford on 17 April 2004, to mark his retirement from the Readership in Classical Archaeology at Merton College, Oxford. Jim Coulton devoted much of his early career to the study of Cycladic architecture. He saw earlier than most how important this area would be in advancing our knowledge not only of ancient architecture but also of many aspects of ancient Greek …
