Excavation of a cairn at Cnip, Uig, Isle of Lewis
The Excavation of Caesar's Camp, Heathrow, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, 1944
W. F. Grimes excavated a rectangular earthwork in advance of airport construction in 1944, at Heathrow, Middlesex, and found a timber building of unique ‘concentric-rectangle’ plan, together with penannular house gullies; all these features were thought to be part of the same settlement except for two Neolithic pits. Now it can be seen that a Late Bronze Age occupation attested by scattered pottery and small finds but next to no identifiable stru…

The excavation of a henge, stone circles and metal-working area at Moncrieffe, Perthshire
The site was excavated in advance of roadworks on the M90 motorway. Four phases of activity were recognized.Phase 1 A class 1 henge monument with a concentric ring of nine pits within. Beaker sherds were recovered from the ditch. A cremation lay outside the entrance. Phase 2 A small burial cairn with contiguous peristalith of stones surrounded by a ring of free standing monoliths. The monument of this phase was almost completely destroyed. Phase …
Excavations at Clatchard Craig, Fife
Neo and IA pottery was found but the multiple ramparts were all of Dark Age date. Ramparts 1 and 3 were timber-laced and had been burnt; radiocarbon dates suggest construction in the 6th/7th century AD. Rampart 2, on a different line, incorporated mortared Roman stones. Finds include a metal disc in hanging-bowl style and a group of clay moulds for penannular brooches of 8th century type. Au (abr)
The Arbroath Antiquary Club's excavations at Castle Rock promontory fort, Auchmithie, Arbroath and Saint Vigeans, Angus District
A coastal bivallate fort, probably in domestic use in the early centuries AD, was excavated by D A Gardner in 1968-74. A reused cup-and-ring marked stone was built into the structure. F B
Cauldron Chains from Bailie Knowe, Dumfriesshire
Drawings made by Francis Grose show parts of two iron cauldron chains, one of Great Chesterford type, found at Bailie Knowe in 1789
Some objects from peat bogs
Pot, 5th-8th century; wooden scoop and one-piece bog-butter trough
Some early querns
Six saddle or trough querns are described, three found in or on chambered cairns, one built into a beaker cist, and one quern and two rubbers from Jarlshof. Some other trough querns are listed. The lack of a clear distinction between saddle and trough querns is noted, and the need for more information on their typology and chronology, towards which a few suggestions are made

Excavation of a standing stone at Deepdale, Stromness, Orkney
During the winter of 1976-7, the larger of two standing stones 2.75 km SW of the Ring of Brodgar became loosened during ploughing and was removed by the farmer, Mr B Reid.Shortly afterwards a local teacher, Mr S Firth, noticed the loss and informed the Orkney Heritage Society.Accordingly it
Three stone axes from Newmarket, Isle of Lewis
III May 1976 Mr and Mrs A Morrison of 100 Newmarket, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis found three stone axes and a flint scraper when cutting peat near Newmarket at c NGR NB 426367 (Ponting 1977). Mrs Morrison reports that the axes were found at the base of the peat and close together as shown in the diagram (fig 1,5) with the flint below the axes. The position suggests they were buried in a container, perhaps a bag. The find was drawn to my attention by…
Excavations at Dun Carloway broch, Isle of Lewis
NB 190412. The NE mural chamber contained a thick occupation deposit with layers of ash representing a series of superimposed hearths; the large quantity of pottery suggests secondary use of the chamber for firing pottery. This is of plain ware, including large jars with tall everted rims and occasional applied cordons, datable elsewhere in the Hebrides to 5th-7th centuries AD. A R

A Pictish pin from Golspie, Sutherland
NH 824998. A decorated gilt-bronze pin was found in 1974 at Golspie; one side of the flat head is decorated in cast 'chip-carved' technique with a male face, characterized by 'frown-lines' on the brow and prominent ears. The pin is unique in Scotland, but its decoration and technique link it to Pictish stone-carving and metalwork of the 8th and 9th centuries AD, and its findspot lies in an area of known Pictish activity.
