Late Antique Industry in the Urban Public and Private Spaces of Asia Minor
Hawara ( Hw.t‐wr.t ; Аὐῆριs) at the entrance of the Egyptian Fayyum was the burial place of the 12th Dynasty pharaoh Amenemhat III (ca. 1842–1797 BCE ), who was deified after his death as “Pharaoh Marres”.
Analyzing Domestic Contexts at Sagalassos
There has been a renewed interest in the study of domestic space in antiquity, focusing upon the importance of small, (semi-)portable objects and their contexts in order to investigate human behavior. In these studies, the use of domestic space is examined by describing the contents of rooms and by linking these contents to specific activities. This article adds to the discussion by proposing a methodology for interpreting artifact distribution p…
Two Late Antique Residential Complexes at Sagalassos
The town of Sagalassos, located in south-western Turkey, was an important regional centre from the Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity. Since the 1990s, the site has been the subject of systematic interdisciplinary research focusing on industrial, commercial, and residential areas of the town. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the excavations of two residential complexes in the town, including a palatial mansion to the north of …
Housing in Late Antiquity
To a certain extent, our knowledge of late antique domestic architecture in the different areas of the Roman Empire is distorted by the uneven nature of archaeological research carried out to date. Regions such as Italy, Turkey and Syria, which have traditionally received a great deal of attention, and have for decades witnessed large-scale excavations, understandably offer more information than areas only more recently explored, such as the Danu…
Housing in Late Antiquity
This chapter gives an overview of various aspects of late antique housing, referring to the key works and contributions in this field. Archaeological remains represent the best evidence for the appearance and function of late antique residential buildings. Late antique written sources include descriptions of villas and houses, as do earlier works. To understand the layout, function and appearance of housing in Late Antiquity, social factors must …

New Light on the Egyptian Labyrinth
New Light on the Egyptian Labyrinth
Hawara in the Fayum is known to be the site of the Egyptian Labyrinth. Only scanty remains are left of this temple which was part of the pyramid complex of Amenemhat III. Despite drastic interventions such as the construction of a canal and numerous scientific as well as illicit excavations, new evidence on the Labyrinth was found during a survey by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) in March 2000. Two Middle Kingdom sculptures that pro…
