Sedimentary ancient DNA metagenomic analysis provides new insights into farming in central Norway from the Bronze Age to late Medieval period
Sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) has been proposed as a key methodology for reconstructing paleoclimates and biodiversity over time. To a lesser extent, it has been explored as a complementary tool for reconstructing human-driven local environmental changes over time, such as those explored in open air archaeological sites. Our study employs a sedaDNA metagenomic approach to investigate land use and environmental change at the archaeological sit…
Kammergravpraksis i Norge i vikingtid – en analyse av Hestnes-funnet i Valsøyfjord
This study examines the Viking Age chamber grave discovered at Hestnes in Valsøyfjord, Trøndelag, Norway. The grave contained a richly equipped female burial with well-preserved textiles and jewellery, offering rare insights into this burial practice. Radiocarbon dating and typological analysis date the burial to between 850 and 920 AD. The grave's construction involved a wooden chamber with corner posts and horizontal planks. The deceased was pl…
Ritual Practice at Late Iron-Age and Viking-Age Cemeteries in Norway
THREE PROPOSED LATE IRON- AND VIKING-AGE MORTUARY HOUSES were recently excavated in Central Norway. Excavations and geoarchaeological investigations imply underground wooden buildings resembling domestic houses with doors. Radiocarbon dating indicates three succeeding buildings dating c AD 500–950. The finds included animal and food sacrifices. With their funerary context, the buildings provided an opportunity to frequently visit and interact wit…
Eldre jernalders tjæreproduksjon ut av tåken. Om tidlig norsk tjæreproduksjon med utgangspunkt i et funn på Averøy i Møre og Romsdal
For many years it has been well known that tar was an available commodity in the Norwegian Iron Age, but until recently no production site or installation for such production was known. In this paper two recently discovered tar production sites, in south-eastern and mid-Norway respectively, are presented and discussed. Both are clay-lined funnel-shaped pits that are dug into the ground with an upper part where the wood was stacked and lit, and a …
