Totternhoe Stone and Flint in Hertfordshire Churches
THIS paper, after examining briefly the geology of the chalk formation, describes the characteristics of Totternhoe stone. The history of the quarries is traced, mainly from accounts of the king's works, and from the St. Albans Abbey chronicles. Profiles of mouldings taken from a dated and documented church tower in Bedfordshire are compared with profiles of mouldings from Hertfordshire with a view to identifying a Totternhoe style.
