  • Hillforts and Defended Enclosures of the Welsh Borderland

    Open Access•W J Britnell, R J Silvester•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2018

Hillforts and defended enclosures are among the earliest and most enduring landmarks in the landscape of the Welsh borderland region and are vital to our understanding of its social and economic history for a millennium and a half, from the Late Bronze Age through to the early post-Roman period. Small-scale rescue excavations during the course of pipeline construction have revealed a single Middle Bronze Age round-house, ring-ditch, and pits on a lowland site in the upper Severn valley with associated radiocarbon determinations which suggest a date within the range 1400–1170 cal BC. Associated finds include a large assemblage of charred naked barley and plain and decorated vessels of cordoned, bucket, and barrel urn traditions, together …

  • The Excavation of Two Cairns and Associated Features at Carneddau, Carno, Powys, 1989–90

    Alex Gibson, Stephen Aldhouse-Green et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1993•Cited by: 5

The complete excavation of one and the partial excavation of a second bronze age structured cairn are described. The excavations provided important evidence for the construction sequence of the cairns and Welsh bronze age funerary practices. A series of radiocarbon dates was obtained for the collared urns associated with the cairns

  • An Assemblage of Late Bronze Age Metalworking Debris from Dainton, Devon

    Open Access•Stuart Needham, R J Silvester et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1980•Cited by: 8•References: 2

Excavated sites referable to the earlier first millennium B.C. are rare in the south-west peninsula. Although Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor exhibit well preserved Bronze Age landscapes, most of the upland settlements are attributed to the second millennium and there are few which on present evidence fall within the succeeding centuries (Silvester 1979). Beyond the granite moors, pottery from Kent's Cavern, Torquay and the Mount Batten peninsula, near …
