  • New evidence of contacts across the Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Miglé Urbonaité-ubé, Torbjörn Brorsson•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2024

The Late Bronze Age (1100–500 cal BC) has been the focus of many recent studies in the Baltic region. The contacts between societies in the Baltic Sea area are identified by bronze, amber, pottery and other artefacts, but there is still little evidence of contact between the western and eastern coasts. This article presents analysis of a pottery assemblage from the Kukuliškiai site (880–400 cal BC) (Lithuania) and its macroscopy and inductively c…

  • Multidisciplinary Research in Late Bronze Age Kukuliškiai Settlement (Klaipėda District)

    Open Access•Miglé Urbonaité-ubé•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2022

The aim of this article is to present the most important results of the archaeological research of the Kukuliškiai settlement (Klaipėda district) in 2017–2020. During 3 seasons of the research, more than 3 hectares of the territory on the Littorina sea terrace were scanned by GPR, 101 geological drills were hammered, and an area of 45m2 was investigated. Fifteen AMS 14C dates were taken from different objects and stratigraphic layers of the settl…

  • Imported tableware and socio-cultural change in the urban community

    Open Access•Miglé Urbonaité-ubé•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2022

The period from the 16th to the 17th century is known for changes in material culture, especially in dining traditions, as different tableware appeared, replacing the dominant pottery of the medieval period. New types of technologically and functionally advanced vessels and dishes including Dutch and Italian tin-glazed earthenware, German stoneware, and a variety of slipwares were changing dining traditions across Europe. All this can be observed…

  • The Meaning of Eagles in the Baltic Region. A Case Study from the Castle of the Teutonic Order in Klaipėda, Lithuania (13th–14th Century)

Open Access•Freydis Ehrlich, Giedrė Piličiauskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2020

In this paper, we examine archaeological bird remains from Klaipėda Castle (Ger. Memel), western Lithuania. The castle was built in 1252, and during the Middle Ages, it was the northernmost castle of the Teutonic Order in Prussia. The castle together with its adjacent town were subjected to wars and changing political situations over the centuries, but nevertheless represented a socially higher status. The studied bird remains were found during t…

  • Stoneware from the 14th to the 17th Centuries Found in Archaeological Excavations in Vilnius

    Open Access•Miglé Urbonaité-ubé•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2018

Late Medieval and Early Modern Period stoneware production is often found in archaeological excavations around the world. The identification and analysis of these objects provides information about technical innovations, long-distance trade, and social and economic changes in societies. Stoneware vessels were used for pouring and storing liquids, and thus indicate changing drinking habits. Vessels are dated and classified by their surface treatme…

  • The English Merchants’ Settlement in Šventoji

    Open Access•Edvinas Ubis, Miglé Urbonaité-ubé•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2016

A settlement was established by English merchants in Šventoji in the second half of the 17th century. The rich collection of artefacts and historic documents distinctly suggests the daily life of merchants. In this paper, the artefacts are assessed as indicators of the cultural and personal identity. Most of the finds were imported, and not locally produced. Their provenance, if possible, was identified and associated with manufacturing centres b…

The paper analyses maiolica ceramic dishes from the late 16th and early 17th centuries found in Vilnius’ Old Town. The items in question were the first imported maiolica dishes in the town. They are classified and their production sites are identified on the basis of their technical and stylistic characteristics, and in accordance with foreign analogies. Thus, five plates are assigned to the Antwerp production centre, while the stylistic and manu…
