Evidence for long-distance contacts at the turn of eras
Located in the North European Plain and the heart of the Polish lands, the historic region of Kuyavia has long been an area where cultural communication and trade routes criss-crossed. This geographical characteristic had transformative effects on the region’s inhabitants of the Pre-Roman and Roman Iron Age, known as the Przeworsk culture. The attributes of a prehistoric society flourishing in a region of peripheral cross-roads are particularly m…
The Treasure of Roman denarii from Gąski site no. 18 (Kuyavia). Preliminary remarks
The Barbaricum – the lands beyond the borders of the Roman Empire – was a space of dynamic population movements, intensive trade contacts and long-distance war expeditions. The treasure of Roman denarii, found in the summer of 1987 at the settlement of the Iron Age Przeworsk culture at Gąski (Kuyavia, Poland), archaeological site no. 18, is well-embedded into this historical setting. The deposit, which probably consisted of 143 coins originally, …
Amber in the Iron Age communities of the Kuyavia region. A case study of Gąski site no. 18
The historic region of Kuyavia has long represented an important area of cross-cultural communication in the heart of the Polish lands. During the Iron Age, Kuyavia evolved into a transit area for the amber trade between continental Europe and the Mediterranean region. This had transformative effects on the area’s inhabitants, known as members of the Przeworsk Culture, for instance in Gąski site no. 18, where the remains of a Pre-Roman Iron Age c…
Women – Trade – Cultural Interactions in the Late Iron Age
The collection of archaeological finds from Lesonice provides a unique evidence for contacts between the Late La Tène environment in the Middle Danube region and the territory of south-eastern Poland. Problematic circumstances of finding and atypical localisation do not allow to clearly determine the find context. The article therefore discusses both possibilities – burial and hoard/offering. The assemblage of finds can be dated to stage LTD1 or …

Andrzej Michałowski, Jakub Niebieszczański, Milena Teska, Patrycja Kaczmarska, Non-invasive magnetometric prospection in forested area
The following article concerns the results of a combined non-invasive and invasive fieldworks in Mirosław, site 37 (Piła county, Wielkopolska voivodeship, Northern Poland). The site is a Wielbark culture barrow cemetery located in a forested area, thus limiting it access to a variety of methods. With the usage of a single-sonde gradientometer it was possible to survey the site by the means of magnetometry. The magnetic map of the site indicated p…

Andrzej Michałowski, Milena Teska, Formation of the younger Pre-Roman Iron Age cultural model in Wielkopolska
The start of the younger Pre-Roman Iron Age was the time of a transformation of the communities residing in this region into a new civilizational quality that was radically different from the quality of the preceding period. In the interior of the continent, a certain “Celt fashion” could be noticed, which was manifested in adaptation of patterns of both material culture and, most likely, elements of Celtic rites. Its course appears to be the key…

The investigations of sites of the earliest prehistory are not distinguished by consistency and geographical evenness in Lithuania. The majority of the excavated Stone Age sites and settlements are located in the South Lithuania where a surface flint raw material is abundant. Other concentration place of the Stone Age sites is the biggest rivers’ (Nemunas, Neris, Šventoji) valleys in the Middle Lithuanian. Also the Stone Age sites are abundant on…

This article is intended to complement the present state of knowledge on the lime production conducted in the area covered by the settlement of the Wielbark culture in the earlier stage of its development. The article includes a review of available evidence of such a production, reflected within a settlement by the presence of a lime kilns. The article focuses mainly on the presence of such features in the south-western area occupied by the Wielb…
