A fortified Early Bronze Age settlement in the Southern Caucasus
Despite intensive study, the socioeconomic and political structuring of the Southern Caucasus Kura-Araxes cultural tradition remain poorly understood. Here, the authors explore the results of integrated geophysical survey and excavation at Artanish 9 in the Lake Sevan highlands (Armenia). They document a small, densely built site enclosed by monumental walls—an anomaly in highland Kura-Araxes settlement systems—offering new insights into sociopol…

Prehistoric gold from Lake Sevan Basin? New research on Armenian gold deposits and objects
The article gives an overview of the results of a joint Armenian-German project in the area of today's open pit gold mine of Sotk in Eastern Armenia. Special attention is given to the preliminary results of the gold analysis. Interdisciplinary studies on regional natural gold deposits - especially the Sotk and Tsarasar deposits - and their archaeological context are presented together with the analytical results of 43 gold and four silver objects…
Geoarchaeological investigations in Artanish Peninsula, Armenia
Within the framework of an Armenian–German research project, taking place between 2019 and 2021 on the Artanish Peninsula at Lake Sevan (Armenia), in addition to numerous (geo‐) archaeological investigations, methods of geochemical prospection have been carried out. The ancient burial grounds of Artanish 23 and Artanish 29 have served as model sites to successfully test the well‐known method of geochemical prospection and evaluation of metal depo…
Vorangegangene U…
The Ecstasy of Gold
Magnetometer prospection of a Bronze Age burial ground in Armenia.– Natural remanent magnetisation is the chief cause of anomalies.– Prehistoric gold mining near Sotk
Ushkiani-Project
The enclosed landscape around the Artanish Peninsula (Lake Sevan/Armenia) can be seen as a prehistoric terra incognita due to the wholesale lack of archaeological investigations to date. Initial approaches in 2019 – funded by the Gerda-Henkel-Foundation – revealed outlines of the prehistoric settlement patterns which could be placed in relation to gold mining in a clearly delineated natural corridor along this line of superregional communication …
Archaeometallurgical prospections in the highlands of Medni Rid, southeastern Bulgaria
