An early medieval hoard at Włynkowo
In the subject literature, the prevalent opinion is that in the local environment of Pomerania in the 11 th century, coins imitating Western European coins were manufactured. This conclusion was based on a discovery made in 1888 in Łupawa near Słupsk. In that location, a several-thousand-specimens large coin assemblage was found; together with silver clumps, bars, and adornments, they were deposited in the final decades of the 11 th century. The …
Reconstruction of geodynamic processes on the Vistula riverbank in medieval Toruń (Poland)
During roadworks on Bulwar Filadelfijski in Toruń, the foundations of a Benedictine monastery and the Holy Spirit Church were uncovered. Geoarchaeological research analyzed fluvial, denudational, and anthropogenic layers in the Vistula riverbank. The aim was to determine the spatial and stratigraphic relationships between fluvial and denudational sediments and anthropogenic embankments in the Vistula riverbank zone. Key findings: (1) Early mediev…

Lacustrine islands in the cultural and natural landscape of Western Slavs in the early Middle Ages
Recent research on central West Slavic sites in the Polish Lowlands (Poland) dated to the Early Middle Ages conducted within the framework of the Man in the Borderland project (NP DH) has shown that settlements located on small lake islands (Pomerania, Lubusz land) were of particular importance, alongside settlements performing complex social and political functions. Their physiognomy relates in many cases to British crannogs, as they have an ant…
Forged coins from early medieval settlement centre in Pawłówek on southern border of East Pomerania (northern Poland)
In the course of explorations of an early medieval fortified centre in Pawłówek on the periphery of East Pomerania and Kuyavia, as many as 49 coins and one planchet were found deposited within cultural layers dated back from the turn of the 1070s to the beginning of the 1100s. Nearly half of them showed characteristics typical of coin counterfeiting. Physical-chemical studies proved that they were manufactured using mainly copper with a small add…
Environmental context and the role of plants at the early medieval artificial island in the lake Paklicko Wielkie, Nowy Dworek, western Poland
This paper reports the archaeobotanical investigation of the early medieval lake site near Nowy Dworek, in the west of Poland, focussing on the role of plants on and around the site. The construction of a small, artificial island in a lake similar to Irish crannogs, traces of a wooden bridge and archaeological artefacts all indicate that the site was a special place for the local Slav community in the 9th–10th centuries ad.
