An early medieval hoard at Włynkowo
In the subject literature, the prevalent opinion is that in the local environment of Pomerania in the 11 th century, coins imitating Western European coins were manufactured. This conclusion was based on a discovery made in 1888 in Łupawa near Słupsk. In that location, a several-thousand-specimens large coin assemblage was found; together with silver clumps, bars, and adornments, they were deposited in the final decades of the 11 th century. The …
Early Medieval hoard from Gąski near Inowrocław
The bullion hoard was recovered using a detector tool from the multicultural site at Gąski, Inowrocław commune (site 18) in the years 2008–2015. Originally, the deposit involved at least 273 elements scattered as a result of deep ploughing. It comprises Islamic coins (183 specimens), West European coins (71 specimens), as well as silver jewellery (19 specimens). At The Crossroads of Trade Routes. Pre-Teutonic Chełmno, Poland
Archaeological investigations at Kałdus and its surroundings have yielded convincing new evidence of the historic stronghold of Chełmno, which was given to the Teutonic Order by a Piast duke, marking the beginning of the monastic state in Prussia
Forged coins from early medieval settlement centre in Pawłówek on southern border of East Pomerania (northern Poland)
In the course of explorations of an early medieval fortified centre in Pawłówek on the periphery of East Pomerania and Kuyavia, as many as 49 coins and one planchet were found deposited within cultural layers dated back from the turn of the 1070s to the beginning of the 1100s. Nearly half of them showed characteristics typical of coin counterfeiting. Physical-chemical studies proved that they were manufactured using mainly copper with a small add…
A silver deposit from Niedźwiedź – another premise in the study of the origins and function of a stronghold in steklin in Dobrzyń region
The article concerns an early medieval silver hoard, recently (and accidentally) discovered at a suburb settlement in Niedźwiedź in Dobrzyń region. The settlement is a part of a large complex with a stronghold and a developed lake shore, identified with the historical Steklin mentioned in the so-called Mogilno Falsification. The hoard, consisting of 28 coins and six pieces of jewelry, was deposited after 1080. The factual scope of the article inc…
Wczesnośredniowieczne grodzisko w Skrwilnie (stanowisko 1), w świetle badań przeprowadzonych w 2015 roku
W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań archeologicznych przeprowadzonych na wczesnośredniowiecznym grodzisku w Skrwilnie (stanowisko 1) w 2015 roku. W trakcie prac rozpoznano relikty drewniano-ziemnego wału, elementy wczesnośredniowiecznej infrastruktury związanej z zabudową majdanu oraz strefą przylegającą bezpośrednio do Jeziora Skrwileńskiego. Pozyskany materiał ceramiczny reprezentuje formy charakterystyczne dla Kujaw i ziemi chełmińskiej w X…
Źródła nieceramiczne z początku wczesnego średniowiecza ze strefy chełmińsko-dobrzyńskiej
Two stages of pottery development, corresponding to the structure of vessel assemblages, have been identified in the Chełmno-Dobrzyń region: an initial settlement stage (latter half of the 7th and early 8th century), characterised by a low level of occupation within this region, and a stage of intensified settlement activity (8th and 9th centuries), marked by significantly more dynamic development. In addition to analysis of pottery assemblages, …
