An Early Iron Age Female Funeral Site in the Ukrainian Forest-Steppe
The article reports the results of research focused on Barrow 3 in Ivanivtsi-Antonivka, Vinnitsia oblast, Ukraine, which was carried out by a Polish-Ukrainian team in 2019. This small and badly damaged barrow contained just seven features, including only two graves. The results of the multifaceted analyses indicated that despite the small number of sites, the history of the barrow can be divided into three phases – all resulting from the activity…
Long Knives of the Scythian Culture
The article examines Scythian long knives that are similar in length to double-edged daggers. Critically analysing the hypothesis which interprets these items as weapons, it shows that the difference between a fighting knife and utilitarian knife consists not in their measurements, but in their constructive features. In particular, long knives have much slimmer proportions, unlike daggers. They have neither cross guards nor pommels. This study is…
Barrows in the forest-steppe between the Dniester and Southern Bug, Ukraine. Initial results of comprehensive research
The article presents the preliminary results of research by a Polish-Ukrainian team who in 2018-2023 worked on the project of comprehensive exploration of barrows situated in the forest-steppe between the Southern Bug and Dniester in modern Ukraine. There, two major stages of erecting and using barrows were distinguished for the 3rd and 1st millennia BC. Two barrows discussed herein, explored as part of the project, were erected in the second sta…

In 1970 and 1972 four Scythian Age barrows near Velyka Bilozerka village, Zaporizhia Oblast, were excavared. Barrow 2/1970. Two graves were discovered. One of them was totally looted. Barrow 1/1972. All Scythian Age graves were looted. Despite this fact, the barro…
Scythian-Time Sword from the Zamkova Hora in Kyiv (on the Materials of V.V. Khvoiko Research)
The sword from excavations provided by V.V. Khvoiko is published in this article. The artifact was found in the late 19th century at Zamkova Hora in the historical part of Kyiv. Its form reconstructed quite relatively. Due to extant fragments, it was a middle-size specimen with oval pommel and triangular (?) crossguard. Due to the analogous burial finds (Pereshchepyne, barrow 12; Staryi Merchyk, barrow 11), it is dated by the 4th c. BC. Region, w…
Barrow 6 of Vodoslavka Burial Ground. The Grave of Scythian Nobility
This is the first publication of the barrow 6 of burial ground placed near Vodoslavka village in Novotroitskyi district of Kherson Oblast of Ukraine. Under the small mound of soil 1.4 m height two wealthy persons were buried in the same catacomb with two entering pits. Due to stratigraphy observation, the funeral rate in this case had two phases. Firstly, the body of Scythian noble warrior was placed in the grave in his armour and with weapon. Ne…
Scythian-Time Daggers with Simplified Cross-Guards (Based on the Materials from the National Museum of History of Ukraine)
In this article, daggers from the depository of the National Museum of History of Ukraine having simple geometrical cross-guard with segment or rectangular form are analyzed. Due to the set of analogies, they are dated from the mid 6th to mid 5th centuries BC. The ornamentation of well-known examples is considered from the new point of view. First of all, a significant difference in ornamentation technique between the Middle Scythian daggers with…

The Fortresses of Ukraine. The Builders of Early Iron Age Strongholds in Podolia
The most challenging question regarding the defensive settlements of the Pontic forest-steppe is the reason behind their construction at all and size. The most frequent interpretations centre around two questions: were they to protect from external threats (i.e. the nomads) or were they the result of a carefully planned construction strategy related to the economic and social pressure from the Greek colonies in the Black Sea region? It is also po…
