    In 1998 a circle of timber posts within the intertidal zone on the north Norfolk coast was brought to the attention of the Norfolk County Council Archaeological Service.     British dendrochronology is based on the analysis of oak, but over the past few years an English Heritage funded research project has been investigating the viability of analysing conifers used in historic contexts. The primary aim of this is to extend the scope of British dendrochronology to incorporate structures built of coniferous timber.
