Westward on the High-Hilled Plains
The West Midlands has struggled archaeologically to project a distinct regional identity, having largely been defined by reference to other areas with a stronger cultural identity and history, such as Wessex the South-West, and the North. Only occasionally has the West Midlands come to prominence, for instance in the middle Saxon period (viz. the kingdom of Mercia), or, much later, with rural south Shropshire being the birthplace of the Industria…
The Pershore Hoards and Votive Deposition in the Iron Age
A large hoard of Iron Age coins was discovered by metal-detecting at Pershore, Worcestershire, in 1993. During small-scale archaeological excavation further Iron Age coins were recovered, including a likely second hoard. Further fieldwork in the same vicinity as the hoard(s) produced more Iron Age finds, including more coins, and a possible fragment of a twisted wire gold torc. In total 1494 Iron Age gold and silver coins were recovered. Geophysi…
Iron Age Settlement at Blackstone, Worcestershire
Aerial photography in 1957 resulted in the discovery of a rectangular double-ditched enclosure overlooking the Severn floodplain near Bewdley, Worcestershire (UK). Excavation in the 1970s, in advance of gravel extraction, provided limited evidence of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age activity prior to occupation in the later Iron Age, when the enclosure was established. This comprised a ditch and bank, and later a palisade and ditch, with sing…

LONDON: GREENWICH (TQ/389773). F. Willmot and the Lewisham Natural History Society partly excavated the in-flil of a circular man-made shaft at the old Greenwich Observatory. This was thought to be a well, reputedly 120 ft. deep, used by Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, c. 1675, for observations on the stars. The shaft was taken down to 24 ft. below ground level. In-fill material (completely unstratified) dated in the main from c. 1700 and …
Excavations at the Medieval Village of Wythemail, Northamptonshire
EXCAVATION of a single enclosure revealed a sequence from early 13th-century timber buildings to structures with stone foundations, or completely stone-built, in the later 13th and 14th centuries. A two-roomed long-house was replaced by a more complex four-roomed long-house built on a different alignment. Also in the enclosure were a sequence of six outbuildings rebuilt in various positions. In the 13th century there were changes in property boun…

YORKSHIRE, EAST RIDING: WHARRAM PERCY (SE/8S8642). The sixth season on St. Martin's Parish church was directed by Mrs. D. G. Hurst for the Deserted Medieval Village Research Group. Inside the nave Mrs. J. E. Le Patourel excavated an area to follow the levels found in 1966. For earlier reports see relevant section in Medieval Archaeology. The bell-pit was completed and wag found to contain a complex series of deposits. It is hoped that the analysi…

Post-Medieval Britain in 1966
THE FOLLOWING CLASSIFICATION, while embracing many more types of site than could be excavated in any year, includes, it is hoped, every aspect of activity in the post-medieval period which could leave traces capable of elucidation by the archaeological method in the future. I am greatly indebted to the assistance and advice of Messrs. K. J. Barton, L. A. S. Butler, D. W. Crossley and J. G. Hurst in the compilation of this list. Excavations and fi…
