  • Report on the Re-investigation of the Westley (Bury St. Edmunds) Skull Site

    Open Access•D F W Baden-Powell, Kenneth P Oakley et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1953•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Fossil human remains which can be attributed to the Lower Palaeolithic period are so rare that it is important to investigate thoroughly all finds for which such claims have been made. Almost all the human skulls discovered in Pleistocene deposits in Britain have proved to belong to Homo sapiens . Where the deposits are older than Upper Palaeolithic it is more than likely that such remains are not contemporaneous but represent later intrusive bur…

  • Palaeoliths from the Fen District

    Open Access•D F W Baden-Powell•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1950•Cited by: 1•References: 12

New discoveries during recent years of Palaeolithic implements near March and other places in the Fen District are important, because little is known of the cultural stages which can be correlated with the marine March Gravel. As far as I know the only palaeoliths which have been reported so far from the Fenland area are:— (1). A flake of Levalloisian type from Griffin's pit, one mile south-east of Wimblington; and a flake of Clactonian type from…

  • Experimental Clactonian Technique

    Open Access•D F W Baden-Powell•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1949•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The exact way in which ancient man made stone implements has occupied the interest of many prehistorians. One way of helping to solve this problem is by trying to make implements oneself. Although several investigators have done isolated and rather sporadic work along these lines, there seem to be few accounts of any systematic series of experiments. The most complete descriptions known to me are those by J. Reid Moir (hand-axes and Levallois fla…
