Excavations at Castle of Wardhouse, Aberdeenshire
Advanced plough erosion prompted rescue excavation at the moated site of Castle of Wardhouse in1988.An integrated programme of work involving aerial photography, field survey, remote sensing, palynological analysis and excavation enabled interpretation of the complex development of the site in its historic environment (beyond this, palynology indicates human intervention in the environs since at least 5000 BP).The defences of the 13th-century moa…
An Environmental History of the Upper Kennet Valley, Wiltshire, for the Last 10,000 Years
Research on the late Pleistocene and Holocene environment and archaeology of the upper Kennet valley, north Wiltshire, is described. In concentrating the work in the valley bottom, the main aims were: (1) to see if there was a record of environment and archaeology there, and if so to detail it; and (2) to redress brasses in research towards the visible archaeology of slopes and plateaus and their environmental record. Soils and sediments with bio…
The excavation of a Mesolithic horizon at 13-24 Castle Street, Inverness
A microlithic flint industry dating to c 5000 be was found, containing 137 retouched pieces and 4700 other fragments. No structures were identified. The occupation level in which the flints were found was sealed by a complex soil horizon that included two marine transgressions
The Pit Alignment at Eskbank Nurseries
Eskbank Nurseries, a market garden allotment some 200 m long and 30 to 40 m wide, lies at approximately 70 m OD on a relatively level terrace overlooking the south bank of the river North Esk (fig. 1). The excavated area is centred on NT320660 and lies within the two superimposed Roman camps first noted as crop marks by St Joseph in 1965 and subsequently excavated by Maxfield in 1972. Her excavation areas I and II were sited to investigate a pit …
A cist at Ruchlaw Mains, East Lothian
A cist was discovered during ploughing on 10 December 1979.It was a simple floored and capped stone box; it contained an adult male skeleton with a Developed to Late Northern beaker placed to the left of the skull.A radiocarbon date suggests it belongs in the last half of the third millenium BC
Excavations on Iona, 1979
An extensive report of excavations prior to the extension of the abbey graveyard indicates that radiocarbon dates fall in the 500 to 800 AD range. Specialist reports include the geology, animal bones (4 sides), leather (10 sides), wood (18 sides) and pollen analysis (11 sides). -- AATA
