Fratelli d’Italia, Christian identity, and claim–audience congruence
This paper analyses how Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy – FdI) articulates Christianity as a repertoire of representative claims and tests their congruence with the party’s electorate. The argument is that representation is a performative act arising from the interaction between claim-maker and audience, and that identity must be read within the enduring social salience of Catholicism in Italy. While the literature on FdI is extensive, the i…
The Rise of Mass Parties, Liberal Italy, and the Fascist Dawn (1919–1924)
Through an in-depth study of the electoral process, the aim of this Element is to analyse the political transformations that occurred in Italy from 1919 to 1924. After the takeover of the low chamber by the mass integration parties in 1919 - Popular and Socialist - concerns grew within the liberal camp. The argument of this Element is that the conservatives failed to adapt and remain competitive in a system characterised by universal suffrage, th…
Italy between liberalism and democracy
In 1912, the Italian parliament approved the extension of male suffrage, making it ‘almost’ universal. This process of revising representation transformed the very idea of the relationship between citizens and the state and shaped a profoundly different Italy. The aim of this article is to trace both the process leading to the approval of universal suffrage and its impact on the party system. With a compilation and analysis of data developed from…
The populist challenge to the liberal democratic regime in Italy and Brazil
Brazil and Italy, Jair Bolsonaro and Matteo Salvini, two populist leaders who, in Latin America and Europe, and alongside Donald Trump in the US, experienced a strong affirmation in 2018 – Italy and Brazil — and 2016 US, respectively. This paper aims to analyse whether and to what extent Bolsonaro and Salvini have effectively created the People through the equivalential chain. That is, according to Laclau, the specificity of populism lies in the …

The investigations were carried out by studying historical and archival sour…
Populism and anti-liberal thought
Aqui, a princ…
