The Guthrie Bell and its Shrine
The Guthrie Bell, so-called because it was preserved for many years at Guthrie Castle, Forfarshire, is an early Christian quadrangular bell made of iron contained within a shrine made of bronze plates. It is argued that because the bell in enshrined it was of some importance and may have belonged to a Celtic saint with a probable date in the 8th century or earlier

Mediaeval Stained Glass recently recovered from the Ruins of Holyrood Abbey Church
The fragments of mediaeval stained glass were found on the top of the vaulting of the south aisle of the nave of Holyrood Abbey Church during repairs to the roof in 1909. They are extremely significant as very little stained glass has survived from mediaeval Scotland. A very brief account of the history and development of mediaeval stained glass is presented and this is followed by a summary of the surviving material in Scotland. At Holyrood ther…
The Church Bells of Linlithgowshire
Sometimes bells were multiplied in a church tower without regard to the musical relation of their notes, such a collection of bells being rung together at haphazard, or the single bells used separately. Another method was to cast a large number of small bells upon which tunes could be played. After the Reformation period there was a great development on the Continent of these musical bells, the sets of which are known as carillons : the bells the…
Ecclesiastical Remains at Cruden and St Fegus, Aberdeenshire
Two font basins were found at Cruden. One was a particularly good example of the simple cylindrical type of basin common in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, well cut and of delicate proportions. The second is very like some old fonts of the extremely rude early type and has been modified in recent times. A medieval bell in a belfry at Cruden is inscribed but its meaning cannot be deciphered. A fragment of a sacrament house has a carving of p…
Note on a Sculptured Stone at the Parish Church of Birse, Aberdeenshire
Dedicated in the name of St Michael, it was in mediaeval times the prebendal church of the Chancellor of the Chapter of Aberdeen Cathedral. The present building was erected in 1779, and there are no remains of the old church. A sculptured grave slab is built into the south wall of the present church. The carving may be described as partly incised with rough broad lines, partly in relief; it represents a sword by the side of a small cross with ano…
Southdean Church, Roxburghshire
Nothing seems to be known of the early history of the church, and the dedication is at\r\npresent unknown. The church is of considerable historic interest for its association with the victory over the English at Otterburn in the summer of 1388. A summary account of the structural and other remains is presented with plans, elevations and architectural details. This includes a font without a drain and a feature known as a super-altar of a type whic…
