Newly-discovered short cist burials with beakers
A short cist at Lochend contained a crouched adult male skeleton with a Beaker vessel, a flint nodule and charcoal. A short cist at Kirkaldy contained a Beaker urn, a tanged blade of bronze with a hazel-wood haft, and a smaller bronze object like a pin, a flint flake, twelve conical buttons, and an elongated bead of "jet" and a very decayed skeleton. A second cist contained portions of a leather covering with a bone-hafted knife-dagger in its she…
A Bronze-Gilt Harness Mounting from Jarlshof
The object was found in a pit in the course of tracing out the boundary wall of the prehistoric settlement which in turn was crossed by the wall of a Viking house. The ornamentation consists of a combination of chip-carving and interlacing work, together with an enrichment of geometrical patterns. It is conceivable that the mount was re-used as a brooch

A Cinerary Urn at Horsbrugh Castle Farm, Parish of Innerleithen, Peeblesshire

Short Cists in Roxburgh and Sutherland, and Rock Sculpturings in a Cave at Wemyss, Fife
While ploughing at Heiton Mill farm, near Kelso, in April of last year, Mr Alexander Martin exposed the cover-stone of a cist through his plough coming in contact with it.Placed near the top of rising ground about a quarter of a mile from the farmhouse and about 100 yards from the south bank of the Tweed, the cist lay 70 east of north magnetic or nearly north-east and southwest, and was formed by four slabs set on edge, the two at the ends being …

Excavations at Reay Links and at a Horned Cairn at Lower Dounreay, Caithness
Excavation of the cairn revealed a chamber containing disarticulated human bone, Neolithic and Beaker pottery, a stone axe and animal bone. A secondary cist contained a skeleton and two Beaker vessels. Investigation of mounds in the vicinity of a known Viking grave at Reay Links revealed four empty long cists and an unstratified bronze strap end of early medieval date
Cinerary Urns from Hunterston and Seamill, West Kilbride, Ayrshire, and a Short cist at Phantassie, East Lothian
An urn found at Fence's Farm, Hunterstone contained cremated human bone, charcoal and a bead of shale or lignite. A second urn found at Seamill in 1830 contained cremated human bone. A stone cist found at Phantassie contained the very poorly preserved skeleton of a child
Excavation of Graves at Ackergill and of an Earth-house at Freswick Links, Caithness, and a Description of the Discovery of a Viking Grave at Reay, Caithness
Further excavation at Ackergill near Wick revealed a further five long cists containing extended burials. Three of the cists were located within kerbed four-sided enclosures beneath a single mound. A smaller adjacent mound sealed the other two cists. The stone-built earth-house consisted of two curvilinear chambers and a passageway. A layer of clay covered the floor and parts of the walls. A midden located nearby included pottery sherds, animal a…
Excavation of a number of Graves in a Mound at Ackergill, Caithness
A number of stone-built long cists within a long mound were excavated. Graves 1-4 were contained within square or nearly square settings of stone, in the form of a kerb, either built, or composed. of slabs set on edge. The burials were made in cists, and the cists were surrounded and covered with boulders and stones, with a top layer of white quartzite pebbles covering all. Each cist contained a single individual, although in the same enclosure t…
Excavation of a Chambered Cairn at Ham, Caithness, and of a Hut-Circle and Two Earth-Houses at Freswick Links, Caithness
Excavation of a round cairn at Ham revealed a single chamber and an entranceway. The presence of only limpet shells and fish bones within the chamber suggested that it had been re-used as a habitation. A stone-built hut circle had an entrance, a paved floor and a possible hearth. Two earth-houses lay side by side and were of broadly similar form with two chambers and an entranceway. Limpet shells were found in both structures. The larger earth-ho…
Report on the Excavation of an Earth-house at Galson, Borve, Lewis
Report on the Excavation of (1) A Long Segmented Chambered Cairn, (2) A Bronze Age Cairn, and (3) A Hut-Circle, in the Parish of Minnigaff, Stewartry of Kirkcudbright
A long cairn at Drannandow was very badly denuded and much disturbed. The cairn was near oval and five separate chambers were revealed by excavation. Four of the chambers were split into two compartments. No passage was identified. There were no portal stones and no artefacts. Two cists were found within a nearby round cairn. The central cist was surrounded by a stone setting and contained a Food Vessel, an unworked flint and a fragment of charco…
