How do cardiovascular risk prediction equations developed among 30–74 year olds perform in older age groups? A validation study in 125 000 people aged 75–89 years
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction equations are being used to guide risk management among increasingly older individuals. We examined the performance of recent equations, derived from a 2006 cohort including almost all New Zealanders aged 30-74 years, among older people. METHODS: All New Zealanders aged 75-89 years in contact with state-funded health services in 2006 without prior CVD or heart failure and with complete pred…
Ten essentials for action-oriented and second order energy transitions, transformations and climate change research
The most critical question for climate research is no longer about the problem, but about how to facilitate the transformative changes necessary to avoid catastrophic climate-induced change. Addressing this question, however, will require massive upscaling of research that can rapidly enhance learning about transformations. Ten essentials for guiding action-oriented transformation and energy research are therefore presented, framed in relation to…
The Possibility of Metaphysics
The Reception and Codification of Systems of Law in Southern Africa
The problems of reception and codification discussed by Dr. A. N. Allott in his article on “The Authority of English Decisions in Colonial Courts” in [1957] 1 J.A.L. 23 et seq. have also been encountered in Southern Africa and something of interest and value may be found in an account of experience of the problems in this area. 2
Observations on the Structure of St. Giles
Description of the Ecclesiastical Remains existing upon St Serf's Island, Lochleven, at 6th July 1881
This paper is prepared at the special request of the late Dr. David Laing, who, in the course of examining historical papers relating to the ecclesiastical establishments formerly existing upon the island, considered it important that a careful examination should he made of the ruined buildings and other remains, recording the result, in evidence of accommodation
Notes of Ancient Tile Paving in Linlithgow Palace
When visiting the ruins of Linlithgow Palace about twenty years ago, my attention was attracted to several polished paving stones, apparently systematically arranged, in the floor of one of the apartments situated on the west side of the quadrangle, upon the principal or first floor up. On clearing away a portion of the moss and weeds, which formed a general covering, it was found that the stones were combined with tiles of different colours, for…
Glencorse and its Old Buildings
In making the investigations for my papers on Eosslyn Castle and Chapel,-already communicated to the Society,-I found occasional references to the legendary story of King Robert the Bruce hunting the deer in Glencorse, and also to members of the Eosslyn family residing in Logan Tower in the same locality. I therefore, in 1877, walked over the glen, carefully examining such remains as then existed relating to its early associations
Rosslyn Castle, its Buildings Past and Present
The Collegiate Church or Chapel of Rosslyn, its Builders, Architect, and Construction
The article begins with a brief biography of the architect of Rosslyn Chapel, Sir William St Clair. The author discusses how foreign workers influenced the architectural style of the chapel, but emphasises that the work of Scottish masons is also notable. He highlights some of the chapel's functional features and describes the significance of the decorative features. The burials within the chapel are also discussed
