  • Excavations of a Monastic Settlement and Medieval Church Site at Killevin, Crarae Gardens, Mid Argyll

    Open Access•Magnus Kirby, Derek Alexander•ARTICLE•Scottish Archaeological Journal•2009

An archaeological excavation was carried out at Crarae Gardens on an area of land adjacent to the site of Killevin Church. The name Killevin indicates an early church foundation, and an early Christian cross had previously been discovered on the site. The excavation identified two large ditches, which are thought to represent two phases of a vallum surrounding an early Christian monastic settlement. Associated post-holes comprising a possible str…

  • Redcastle, Lunan Bay, Angus

Derek Alexander, S Carter et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2006•Cited by: 2

Cropmarks of a cemetery containing square- and round-ditched burials were excavated at Redcastle in 1997 and 1998. A total of sixteen graves was recorded: five in square barrows, two in round barrows and nine unenclosed graves. Another round barrow is clearly visible on the aerial photograph outside the excavation area. Preservation of the graves and the human remains therein varied considerably. Analysis of the bones identified two females, thre…

  • Excavation of a Medieval moated site in Elderslie, Renfrewshire

    Open Access•Derek Alexander, George Haggarty•ARTICLE•Scottish Archaeological Journal•2000

Prior to re-landscaping, an archaeological evaluation was undertaken in August 1998 of the area around the Wallace Memorial in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, which marks the reputed birthplace of Sir William Wallace. In addition to a 16th century structure, known as "Wallace's House", early map evidence suggested that there was a large rectilinear moated enclosure around the site with three rounded corner towers, only one of which now survives at the e…

  • An Atlantic roundhouse at Durcha, Sutherland

Andrew Dunwell, Derek Alexander et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2000

Recent excavations have confirmed the presence of an Atlantic roundhouse within a large mound at Durcha. The presence of a stone fortress at Durcha had been recorded in the eighteenth century, but following stone robbing in the nineteenth century no clear traces of the structure survived to allow confirmation of its identity. The difficulties of the identification and classification of such structures in Sutherland where little excavation has bee…

  • St Germains, Tranent, East Lothian

Derek Alexander, Trevor Watkins et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1999•Cited by: 1

Reports on investigations undertaken between 1978 and 1982 which revealed a penannular ring-ditch, ring-groove houses and a polygonal enclosure with antennae ditches. Evidence suggests that this enclosure was later replaced by a more substantial ditch and bank which then became levelled when a series of stone-paved houses were constructed. There are specialist contributions on: `Early Bronze Age artefacts' by Alison Sheridan (212); `Small finds' …

  • A late medieval hall-house at Uttershill Castle, Penicuik, Midlothian

Derek Alexander, Nicholas Q Bogdan et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1999

This report presents the results of an integrated study of Uttershill Castle, Penicuik, undertaken in advance of a proposed restoration programme.Documentary research was combined with detailed architectural survey and archaeological excavation. The results indicate a sequence of development more complex than first suggested by the appearance of the ruins. The castle was initially a twostorey bastle-house built in the 16th century. The upper floor w…

  • Excavation of a medieval grain-drying kiln and earlier mill-lade at Llanbryde, Moray

Derek Alexander, Timothy G Holden•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1998

The remains of a series of ditches at Lhanbryde are interpreted as the remains of a mill-lade system. The northern end of the lade subsequently contained the remains of a possible grain-drying kiln from which burnt oats and a sherd of pottery indicate an llth-to 13th-century date

  • Excavation of pits containing decorated Neolithic pottery and early lithic material of possible Mesolithic date at Spurryhillock, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire

Derek Alexander, Trevor Cowie et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1998•Cited by: 1

This report describes a number of pits and a linear feature close to the scheduled cropmark site at Farrochie. The remains of a shallow curvilinear ditch and eight pits were recovered in one area which produced evidence for possible Mesolithic and Neolithic activity. In another trench a number of truncated pits with no associated artefacts were recorded. There are notes on: `The chipped stone' by B Finlayson (20); `Palaeoenvironmental results' by…

  • Excavation on Arthur's Seat fort, Edinburgh, 1995

Derek Alexander•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1998

Excavation in advance of construction of a path to the summit investigated part of the defences of the fort on Arthur's Seat.No artefacts were recovered which would either confirm or refute its interpretation as a Dark Age or Early Historic fort. The remains of a later dyke were built on top of the rampart rubble. This dyke appears to be part of the rectilinear enclosure sited to the south-west of the inner rampart and which contains traces of cult…

  • Excavation of a small limekiln at North Medrox, Mollinsburn, North Lanarkshire

    Open Access•Derek Alexander•ARTICLE•Glasgow Archaeological Journal•1996

Excavation of a limekiln at North Medrox, near Mollinsburn, in North Lanarkshire was carried out in advance of the construction of the Loch Lomond Water Supply 1420mm Main from Balmore to Glenhove. The excavation revealed a stone-built, vertical draw-kiln; structural details included a splayed buttressed vent, a brick-built draw-hole, a kiln-bowl base of bedrock, and heavily vitrified sandstone wall faces. The kiln is dated by documentary evidenc…

  • Excavation of a grain-drying kiln and mill lade at Kettlestoun Mains, Linlithgow, West Lothian

    Open Access•Derek Alexander•ARTICLE•Glasgow Archaeological Journal•1996

The Centre for Field Archaeology is contracted to undertake archaeological monitoring of a six year gravel extraction programme at Kettlestoun Mains, Linlithgow. In the first year of this project, the remains of a grain-drying kiln, containing charred oat seeds and chaff, and a mill lade were excavated. Both of these structures contained post-medieval pottery and represent parts of a wider post-medieval landscape revealed by analysis of documenta…
