  • Retrospectively appraised life changes since the German reunification and health

    Open Access•Hahm, L Altweck et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

BACKGROUND: The German reunification (1989/1990) was a period of rapid socio-structural transformation, with heterogeneous consequences for work, finances, and personal life in East Germany. Drawing on Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study examined whether retrospectively appraised changes since the reunification are associated with later-life health and whether psychosocial resources show gender-specific indirect associations. METHO…

  • Exploring adverse childhood experiences in the wake of system change – A natural experiment comparing East and West Germany

Open Access•Thomas McLaren, Christine Ulke et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2026

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have negative effects on individuals necessitating examination to discern contributing conditions. The use of quasi-experimental settings, arising from socio-political changes, offers retrospective insight into the macro-level context. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of ACEs in the separate macro-systems of both German states, as well as the influence of the socio-political system change due t…

  • The help-seeking process and predictors of mental health care use among individuals with depressive symptoms

Open Access•Vanessa C Jürgensen, Vanessa Juergensen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Purpose: The goal of the study was to identify the most important influences on professional healthcare use of people with depressive symptoms. We incorporated findings from research areas of health behaviors, stigma, and motivation to predict the help-seeking process variables from a wide range of personal factors and attitudes. Methods: A sample of 1,368 adults with untreated depressive symptoms participated in an online survey with three-and s…

  • The differential influence of self-construal on the effect of self-efficacy on the help-seeking process

    Open Access•Thomas McLaren, F H Oosterhuis et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2024

The study's findings, strengths, and limitations are discussed in relation to current research. Results indicate differential experiences of self-efficacy interventions based on individuals' self-construal. Moreover, varying associations among help-seeking variables suggest self-construal-based differences in their interrelationships. These findings highlight the importance of considering self-construal in health related research

  • Active psychoeducational components of antistigma interventions for untreated depressive symptoms

Lina-Jolien Peter, Thomas McLaren et al.•ARTICLE•Stigma and Health•2024

  • Clark’s Nutcrackers of Yellowstone National Park

Diana F Tomback, Thomas McLaren et al.•CHAPTER•Yellowstone's Birds•2023

  • The effects of causal and self-efficacy beliefs on help-seeking for people with depressive complaints

    Open Access•Thomas McLaren, Lina-Jolien Peter et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Background Only approximately a third of people with depressive symptoms seek professional health care. Furthermore, people labelled as mentally ill may experience stigmatisation, which can impede help-seeking behaviour. Aim To examine the effects of three vignette-based interventions endorsing biopsychosocial causal beliefs and strengthening self-efficacy on help-seeking intention and behaviour, as well as the predictive values of these variable…

  • Old Windmills in Scotland, with Special Reference to the Windmill Tower at Dunbarney, Perthshire

Thomas McLaren•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1946

The surviving remains of the Dunbarney Tower are described in detail and a reconstruction is presented. There is no date on the tower, nor on the mansion house, but the doo'cot at the side of the approach to the house bears the date 1697 and the initials J.C. (John Craigie). The masonry of all three buildings is the same in appearance. The windmill is thought to have been built in the second half of the seventeenth century perhaps continuing in u…

  • Ancient Remains at Birnam, Perthshire

Thomas McLaren•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1920

Duncan's Camp is a fort which occupies Duncan's Hill. The camp is roughly oval and it main axis running north-south is eighty yards in length. There are artificial defences on the north side while the others are naturally steep. On the upper surface of a large bench of undisturbed rock at Birnam Hill which slopes slightly towards the west is a group of twenty cup-marks, most of which are well formed and deeply cut. A detached mass nearby has thre…
