  • Ethical issues associated with HIV phylogenetics in HIV transmission dynamics research

Open Access•Farirai Mutenherwa, Douglas Wassenaar et al.•ARTICLE•Developing World Bioethics•2019

The reduced costs of DNA sequencing and the use of such data for HIV ‐1 clinical management and phylogenetic analysis have led to a massive increase of HIV ‐1 sequences in the last few years. Phylogenetic analysis has shed light on the origin, spread and characteristics of HIV ‐1 epidemics and outbreaks. Phylogenetic analysis is now also being used to advance our knowledge of the drivers of HIV ‐1 transmission in order to design effective interve…

  • Racial differences in willingness to participate in HIV prevention clinical trials among university students in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Open Access•Diantha Pillay, Douglas Wassenaar et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2018•References: 30

Students, especially women, are in the highest HIV incidence group in Sub-Saharan Africa. Open Access•Anthony L Pillay, Douglas Wassenaar et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 24

Rates of out-patient psychotherapy follow-up after hospitalisation for non-fatal suicidal behaviour (NFSB) are reported to be poor internationally. A study at a South African general hospital revealed that over a 12-month period 201 patients were admitted and referred for psychological consultation following NFSB. All first appointments were kept. However, only 43.5% of the 191 patients given subsequent out-patient appointments attended. No signi…

  • A History of Ethical Codes in South African Psychology

    Open Access•Douglas Wassenaar, Douglas R Wassenaar•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 27

The purpose of this article is to present a developmental history of formal professional ethics in psychology in South Africa. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between legislation governing the registration of psychologists and professional ethics. Open Access•Anthony L Pillay, Douglas Wassenaar et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This study compares scores on psychiatric disturbance and hopelessness in two adolescent samples. The one sample was a physically ill hospitalized group, and the other was a matched group of healthy control subjects. It was found that the hospitalized physically ill group scored significantly higher on both psychiatric disturbance and hopelessness than the healthy group. At six-month follow-up, the physically ill group's scores on psychiatric dis…

Open Access•Timothy A Barry, Douglas Wassenaar et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1996•References: 17

This study investigated the relationship between coronary heart disease and a number of established coronary risk factors among Indian males. The study investigated whether the following coronary risk factors were able to distinguish those with myocardial infarction from controls: Type A behaviour pattern, stress levels, anger l…

  • The Perceptual and Affective Components of Body Image Disturbances in Anorexic and Normal Females

Open Access•Debbie C Uys, Douglas Wassenaar et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1996•References: 42

The literature is inundated with studies reporting the body image experiences of anorexia nervosa patients and normal weight people. Such studies have not, however, yielded consistent results. The present study reinvestigated the issue bearing in mind the theoretical and methodological limitations of previous research. The perceptual and affective aspects of body image were investigated in 11 white, female anorexic patients and 51 white, female p…

    Open Access•Douglas Wassenaar, Douglas R Wassenaar•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 26

This article describes a model for brief strategic family intervention for use with adolescent parasuicides in a general hospital setting. A rationale and structured therapeutic procedure for intervention are provided. The intervention uses a systemic, time and cost-effective approach which attempts to use the crisis to facilitate resolution of a developmental impasse within the family as a whole. The approach incorporates elements of crisis inte…

  • Researching Family Therapy

    Open Access•Douglas Wassenaar, Douglas R Wassenaar•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 18

The field of family therapy has enjoyed a rapid increase in popularity over the last decade, particularly amongst practically orientated clinical psychologists who are possibly more concerned with pragmatic though poorly defined outcomes than with rigorous and systematically defined outcome criteria. The present article stresses the importance of rigorous evaluation in family therapy process research and explores some of the limitations of applyi…
