The Púchov culture settlement on Zyndram’s Hill in Maszkowice – old materials and new interpretations
The Púchov culture settlement on Zyndram’s Hill in Maszkowice was excavated as early as the mid-20th century and is known from the literature, but the results of the research conducted there have never been fully analysed and published before. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the features and artefacts from this site, recovered during research in the 20th century and excavations conducted since 2010. Based on the analysis of arch…
Burying iron at Tyniec, Maszkowice, and elsewhere
Recent discoveries of hoards composed of iron objects in Lesser Poland suggest the existence of a specific cultural norm of deposition and a high valorisation of this metal at the onset of the Early Iron Age (750-550 BC). By broadening the scope of analysis to include single finds of ‘large irons’ and comparing them with burial assemblages, a contrasting picture of regional dichotomy emerges. It is manifested in differing practices of iron deposi…
Where styles collide
In the Early Iron Age, the Western Carpathians constituted a contact zone of various cultural traditions, which contributed to the complex, syncretic stylistic character of this region. At the same time, due to the scarcity of archaeological data, consisting mostly of relatively poor pottery assemblages from settlements, these mountainous areas escape unambiguous cultural classifications. Leaving aside the problems of taxonomy, this paper is an a…
The Puzzle of Silesia’s Pre-Roman Iron Age
In the autumn of 2014, rescue excavations were carried out at 4A Graniczna Street in Muchobór Wielki, Wrocław. The 2-hectare excavation area yielded remains of a multi-phase settlement, including a stage from the pre-Roman Iron Age. The excavated finds primarily consisted of pottery vessel fragments, alongside a well-preserved middle La Tène Mötschwil-type brooch, daub, and animal bones. Among the identified features were pits, postholes, pit hou…
“Late Hallstatt” hillforts in the Western Carpathians
The article presents new research on fortified settlements from the Early Iron Age in the Orava and Dunajec river valleys. Based on the characteristics of the construction of the fortifications and similarities in terms of material culture, we propose recognizing the hillforts discovered here as a manifestation of one cultural and settlement horizon related to the so-called Pre-Púchov stage. The radiocarbon determinations obtained for the context…
Familiarising the landscape
Despite the continuous increase of archaeological data coming from the Polish Western Carpathians, the colonisation process of the Beskidy Mountains in prehistory is still relatively poorly recognized. The subject of discussion is, in particular, the impact of environmental and cultural factors on the formation of settlement networks in individual periods. This paper considers these questions on the example of a part of the middle Dunajec River b…
