New excavations conducted at the Tophet of Carthage in 2017 and 2018, and again in 2023, led to the discovery of several hundred urns. The precision of the stratigraphic observations, along with the relatively limited extent of later disturbances, allows for accurate dating. The recorded observations concern not only the relative positioning of the urns but also their arrangement within the pits and the surface conditions from which they were exc…

    Open Access•Maria Oliva Rodríguez‐Ariza, José Luis López Castro et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Human Colonization of new lands implied historically the diffusion of new plant species and the exploitation of local plant resources and forests by human communities. Phoenician colonization in the 1st millennium BC had important consequences in Mediterranean agriculture and the exploitation of vegetation in colonized areas. Later, Roman agriculture introduced new changes. The anthracological analysis or charcoal analysis of the archaeological r…

  • Utica’s urban centre from Augustus to the Antonines

Open Access•Imed Ben Jerbania, J Andrew Dufton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 1

Since 2010, a team from the Tunisian Institut National du Patrimoine and the University of Oxford 1 has been investigating Utica’s monumental centre, located at the tip of the promontory on which the city is built (fig. 1). The range and scale of architectural elements littering this area were remarked upon by most antiquarian investigators of the site. Nathan Davis, working at the site in 1858, noted that, despite the fact that it “had been rans…

  • La production des amphores ovoïdes de type « Africaine ancienne » à Utique

    Open Access•Imed Ben Jerbania•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2017

  • The Geoarchaeology of Utica, Tunisia: The Paleogeography of the Mejerda Delta and Hypotheses Concerning the Location of the Ancient Harbor

Open Access•Hugo Delile, Abdelhakim Abichou et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 9

Although the ancient site of Utica has been studied since the 19th century, the location of its harbors remains unresolved as they were buried under sediments as the Mejerda delta prograded and left Utica 10 km inland. Using relief data and a coring survey with sedimentological analysis, we identify the dynamics of the delta's progradation, which produced a double system of alluvial fans. These show that the ancient bay of Utica silted up faster …

  • Observations sur les amphores de tradition punique d’après une nouvelle découverte près de Tunis

    Open Access•Imed Ben Jerbania•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2013

This article clarifies aspects of the production of amphorae in the Punic tradition. Material collected from the dump of a potter’s workshop at Mnihla near Tunis comprised two main types of amphorae : Maña C and the type usually known as «Ancient Tripolitanian » . The presence of wasters and archaeometric analysis of selected sherds indicate local or regional production for both types

  • Thysdrus (El Jem)

Open Access•Imed Ben Jerbania•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Thysdrus (modern El Jem) was one of the most important cities of Roman Africa, located at the crossroads of routes connecting the large port cities of Hadrumetum, Leptiminus, and Sullechthum with the interior.

  • Céramique pré-impériale de Thysdrus (El-Jem, Tunisie)

    Open Access•Imed Ben Jerbania•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2008

The study of a series of ceramic finds from pre-Roman tombs in Thysdrus reveals a new aspect of this Roman site. Although there is little variation among the forms, this assemblage, which fits perfectly into the Punic repertoire of Byzacena, shows the importance of pre-Roman levels from this inland site of the Sahel. This new pre-Roman material sheds light on the indigenous population and its relations with the Phoenicians
