New Data on the Sertorian War at the Vascon Site of Irulegi (Aranguren Valley, Navarre)
Literary sources provide limited information on specific developments during the civil wars of the late Roman Republic, including the Sertorian War. This study describes the attack on the Vascon settlement of Irulegi (Aranguren valley, Navarre), in northern Spain, within the context of this conflict, using the methodological and theoretical frameworks of conflict archaeology. In doing so, it seeks to demonstrate that Roman cultural influences wer…
How Deep in Time and Far in Space
The archaeological research carried out at Irulegi, a hilltop site on the namesake mountain (Aranguren Valley, Navarre, Spain), has revealed one of the most important examples of fortified protohistoric settlements in the western Pyrenees, characterized by its long evolution and the exceptional preservation of its remains. This site has been systematically explored using a range of methods, both geophysical and direct, including GPR, ERT and magn…
Cooking in the Iberian Culture (Sixth–Second Century bc)
In this article we analyse the structures and features related to food processing or preparation and their social and economic implications among the protohistoric communities of the Iberian culture during the Iron Age (sixth–second century bc). Different types of facilities are considered, including ovens, hearths, fireplaces and grinding areas, according to their specific location within the settlements (indoor or outdoor areas). We also look a…
Multimethod Geophysical Survey at the Iron Age Iberian Site of El Molí d'Espígol (Tornabous, Lleida, Catalonia)
This paper presents the results of a multisystem survey using magnetometry and dual frequency ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) carried out at the Iron Age Iberian site of El Molí d'Espígol, Tornabous, Catalonia, dated from the seventh to third centuries bce . The surroundings of the current urban area were explored with magnetometry in order to describe possible features related to the settlement. In the non‐excavated part of the urban area was sur…
The Functional and Symbolic Uses of Space in Western Mediterranean Protohistory
The aim of this paper is to put forward a reinterpretation of several complex domestic units at the Iberian oppidum of Pech Maho (Sigean, western Languedoc, France), dating from the sixth to the third centuries BC. A complementary study of the features and artefacts included in each house leads to the characterization of spaces, the contextualization of activities and the construction of identities within the domestic areas, as well as their diac…
