  • Policy Impediments to Tuberculosis Elimination

Open Access•Matthew Murrill, Katya Salcedo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2025

Despite being preventable, tuberculosis (TB) continues to affect thousands of individuals in the US with an increasing incidence every year since the COVID-19 pandemic. Critical to TB elimination efforts is the scale-up of screening and treatment for the estimated 13 million Americans with TB infection. For the Medicare population, the implementation of TB preventive services is hampered by the lack of clear coverage of TB infection screening. De…

  • Can Primary Care Drive Tuberculosis Elimination? Increasing Latent Tuberculosis Infection Testing and Treatment Initiation at a Community Health Center with a Large Non-U.S.-born Population

Open Access•Amy S Tang, Tessa Mochizuki et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2023

Community health centers (CHC) play a key role in latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) testing and treatment. We performed a retrospective analysis of LTBI testing and treatment among pediatric and adult patients at a CHC with a large non-U.S.-born (USB) population during a series of quality improvement (QI) interventions from 2010 to 2019. Among 124,695 patients with primary care visits, 40% of patients were tested for tuberculosis (TB) infectio…

  • Association of Area-Based Socioeconomic Measures with Tuberculosis Incidence in California

Open Access•Yasser Bakhsh, Adam Readhead et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2022

We assessed the association of area-based socio-economic status (SES) measures with tuberculosis (TB) incidence in California. We used TB disease data for 2012-2016 (n = 9901), population estimates, and SES measures to calculate incidence rates, rate ratios, and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) by SES and birth country. SES was measured by census tract and was categorized by quartiles for education, crowding, and the California Healthy Places In…

  • Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis Among Patients in Baja California, Mexico, and Hispanic Patients in California

    Ietza Bojorquez, R F W Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•References: 15

Objectives. We sought to compare prevalence and determinants of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) between tuberculosis patients in Baja California, Mexico, and Hispanic patients in California. Methods. Using data from Mexico’s National TB Drug Resistance Survey (2008–2009) and California Department of Public Health TB case registry (2004–2009), we assessed differences in MDR-TB prevalence comparing (1) Mexicans in Baja California, (2) Mex…

  • Assessing the validity of tuberculosis surveillance data in California

Open Access•Joan E Sprinson, Elizabeth Lawton et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

For most variables examined on the TB case report, data validity was excellent, indicating a robust surveillance system. However, lower data quality was noted for a small number of variables primarily impacting treatment adherence, including assessment and planning; advocacy; allocation and garnering of resources; and research. The study provides compelling evidence supporting the CDC workgroup's proposed revisions to the TB case report

  • Cost-effectiveness of tuberculosis evaluation and treatment of newly-arrived immigrants

Open Access•Travis C Porco, Bryan Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Background Immigrants to the U.S. are required to undergo overseas screening for tuberculosis (TB), but the value of evaluation and treatment following entry to the U.S. is not well understood. We determined the cost-effectiveness of domestic follow-up of immigrants identified as tuberculosis suspects through overseas screening. Methods Using a stochastic simulation for tuberculosis reactivation, transmission, and follow-up for a hypothetical coh…

  • An Ecological Study of Tuberculosis Transmission in California

Ward P Myers, Janice L Westenhouse et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Objectives. We evaluated the association between ecological factors and rates of tuberculosis within California, using pediatric tuberculosis as an indicator of new transmission. Methods. Ecological variables such as racial/ethnic distribution, immigration level, education, employment, poverty, and crowding were obtained from the United States Census for each census tract in California. These data were incorporated into a negative binomial regres…
