  • The diverse human/bird relationships in backyard bird keeping

Open Access•N Mahon, Orla Shortall et al.•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2026

In 2024 registration of all captive bird flocks became mandatory in Great Britain to improve disease surveillance at a time of increasing avian influenza outbreaks. However, little is known about how health and welfare practices are shaped by the diversity of relationships that characterise UK backyard birdkeeping. We use this moment of change to (1) examine the relationships between backyard keepers, their birds, and the poultry industry, and, (…

  • Beyond profit and planet

Open Access•Mauro Florez, Beatriz Herrera et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2026

Most existing research on digitalisation in agriculture concentrates on studying potential costs or benefits, such as improved efficiency in food production, reduced use of natural resources, and broader environmental gains at the societal level. In contrast, relatively little attention has been paid to the social changes brought about by digitalisation at the farm level. Research on this topic tends to be fragmented, often addressing issues in i…

  • Contextualised care and the management of sheep lameness

    Open Access•N Mahon, B Clark•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2026•References: 11

Interest in contextualised care in veterinary medicine is growing. As yet, there has been little explicit research in relation to farm animals. Here we report on findings from six in-depth, online focus groups with UK farmers (n = 19) and vets (n = 4) exploring sheep lameness management. Transcripts of the focus groups were analysed qualitatively, via a code-book thematic analysis approach. We use the findings to, 1) explore contextualised care f…

  • Animal health and welfare as a public good

Open Access•Beth Clark, Amy Proctor et al.•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This paper presents a novel perspective on an evolving policy area. The UK's withdrawal from the EU has led to the creation of a new Agriculture Act and proposals for significant changes to the way farming subsidies are structured in England. Underpinned by a 'public money for public goods' approach, where public goods are those outputs from the farm system which are not rewarded by markets, yet which provide benefits to many members of society. …

  • The application of a sentiment analysis approach to explore public understandings of animal agriculture

Open Access•N Mahon, Lewis Holloway et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Ideas about farming are important components of consumers' value judgements about the foods they purchase and consume. Nevertheless, a divide exists between public perceptions and the realities of agricultural practices. We take a novel approach, using sentiment analysis, amongst other methods, to explore what consumers think about farming and how the visual elements of agricultural images might contribute to these perceptions. Data were drawn fr…

    Open Access•N Mahon, I Crute et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 187

  • Why bother with Bere? An investigation into the drivers behind the cultivation of a landrace barley

Open Access•N Mahon, Shawn Mcguire et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 9

  • New York inmates' HIV risk behaviors

    N Mahon, Noreen E Mahon•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Cited by: 10•References: 8

OBJECTIVES: The median incidence rate of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) among prisoners is 7 times higher than for the general population. Yet high-risk sexual activity and drug use in US correctional facilities remain unexamined. This study explores inmate perceptions of high-risk behavior in New York state prisons and New York City jails and seeks to generate hypotheses to inform policies and future research. METHODS: Participants we…
