  • Occupational characteristics and disability-free survival after retirement age

Open Access•Sheikh Mohammad Alif, Geza Benke et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background: Certain occupational characteristics have been linked with poor health and reduced longevity. However, the association between occupational characteristics and survival free of disability in a post-retirement age group has not been investigated. Methods: We investigated outcomes in 12,215 healthy older Australian adults in the Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) and ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP) sub…

  • Influence of Childhood Asthma and Allergies on Occupational Exposure in Early Adulthood

Open Access•Orianne Dumas, Nicole Le Moual et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

We aimed to determine whether history of asthma/allergies in childhood was associated with avoidance of jobs with exposure to asthmagens in early adulthood. The Melbourne Atopic Cohort Study recruited 620 children at high risk of allergic diseases at birth (1990-1994). Asthma, hay fever and eczema were evaluated by questionnaires during childhood. A follow-up in early adulthood (mean age: 18 years) collected information on the current job. Occupa…

  • Uncertainty Analysis of Mobile Phone Use and Its Effect on Cognitive Function

Open Access•Chris Brzozek, Kurt K Benke et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Previous epidemiological studies on health effects of radiation exposure from mobile phones have produced inconsistent results. This may be due to experimental difficulties and various sources of uncertainty, such as statistical variability, measurement errors, and model uncertainty. An analytical technique known as the Monte Carlo simulation provides an additional approach to analysis by addressing uncertainty in model inputs using error probabi…

  • Personal Exposure to Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields among Australian Adults

Open Access•Berihun M Zeleke, Chris Brzozek et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

The measurement of personal exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) is important for epidemiological studies. RF-EMF exposure can be measured using personal exposimeters that register RF-EMFs over a wide range of frequency bands. This study aimed to measure and describe personal RF-EMF exposure levels from a wide range of frequency bands. Measurements were recorded from 63 participants over an average of 27.4 (±4.5) hours. RF-…

  • Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Public Health

    Open Access•Kurt K Benke, Geza Benke•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Artificial intelligence and automation are topics dominating global discussions on the future of professional employment, societal change, and economic performance. In this paper, we describe fundamental concepts underlying AI and Big Data and their significance to public health. We highlight issues involved and describe the potential impacts and challenges to medical professionals and diagnosticians. The possible benefits of advanced data analyt…

  • Interocc case–control study

Open Access•Aude Lacourt, Elisabeth Cardis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Thus, there was no evidence that these exposures influence risk of glioma

  • Walls et al. Respond

Helen Walls, Helen L Walls et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•References: 4

Bierman and Rea outlined some corrections and offered further information regarding the lighting sources described in our article. We welcome their comments and respond to each point as follows. First and second, Bierman et al. stated that high-intensity discharge (HID) and fluorescent lamps of similar wattage are approximately equal in terms of efficiency and that light-emitting diode (LED) lamps appear far brighter than fluorescent lamps. Altho…

  • Eye Disease Resulting From Increased Use of Fluorescent Lighting as a Climate Change Mitigation Strategy

Helen Walls, Helen L Walls et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Increased use of fluorescent lighting as a climate change mitigation strategy may increase eye disease. The safe range of light to avoid exposing the eye to potentially damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation is 2000 to 3500K and greater than 500 nanometers. Some fluorescent lights fall outside this safe range. Fluorescent lighting may increase UV-related eye diseases by up to 12% and, according to our calculations, may cause an additional 3000 cases…
