  • Motorcycle helmet use and injury outcome and hospitalization costs from crashes in Washington State

    J Rowland, Frederick P Rivara et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Cited by: 4•References: 15

OBJECTIVES. The incidence, type, severity, and costs of crash-related injuries requiring hospitalization or resulting in death were compared for helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclists. METHODS. This was a retrospective cohort study of injured motorcyclists in Washington State in 1989. Motorcycle crash data were linked to statewide hospitalization and death data. RESULTS. The 2090 crashes included in this study resulted in 409 hospitalizations (20%…

  • Hospitalizations for injury in New Zealand: Prior injury as a risk factor for assaultive injury

    M Denise Dowd, J Langley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 15

OBJECTIVES. This study sought to determine the degree to which injury hospitalization, especially for assaultive injury, is a risk for subsequent hospitalization due to assault. METHODS. A New Zealand hospitalization database was used to perform a retrospective cohort study. Exposure was defined as an injury hospitalization, stratified into assaultive and nonassaultive mechanisms. Hospitalizations for an assault during a 12-month follow-up period…

  • The validity of self-reported smoking: A review and meta-analysis

Donald L Patrick, Allen Cheadle et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994

OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this study was to identify circumstances in which biochemical assessments of smoking produce systematically higher or lower estimates of smoking than self-reports. A secondary aim was to evaluate different statistical approaches to analyzing variation in validity estimates. METHODS. Literature searches and personal inquiries identified 26 published reports containing 51 comparisons between self-reported behavior and bio…

  • Completion rates of clients discharged from drug and alcohol treatment programs in Washington State

    Thomas M Wickizer, T Wickizer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•Cited by: 5•References: 25

OBJECTIVES. The primary goal of this study was to analyze completion rates of clients in drug and alcohol abuse treatment programs in Washington State and to assess the factors associated with treatment completion. A secondary goal was to examine the utility of a state information system as a source of evaluative data. METHODS. Analyses were conducted of 5827 client records contained in the Washington State Substance Abuse Monitoring System, repr…

  • Evaluating community-based nutrition programs: Assessing the reliability of a survey of grocery store product displays

Allen Cheadle, Bruce M Psaty et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 5

A pilot test of a survey of grocery store product displays was conducted to measure the amount of health-education information provided and the proportion of the display devoted to "healthier" products. Inter-rater reliability ranged between 0.73 and 0.78 for the healthiness indices and between 0.30 and 0.67 for the health education measures. Test-retest reliability ranged from 0.44 to 1.0

  • Exercise as a risk factor for infertility with ovulatory dysfunction

    B B Green, Janet R Daling et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 14

To examine the relation of regular vigorous exercise to ovulatory infertility, we interviewed 346 infertile women, in whom there was evidence of ovulatory failure, regarding their exercise patterns during the year preceding their unsuccessful effort to conceive. Their responses were compared with similar exercise histories in women who had successfully conceived at the time the infertile women started trying to become pregnant. Vigorous exercise …
