    M Wright, M A Wright et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1999•Cited by: 8•References: 7

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether denial of handgun purchase is an effective violence prevention strategy. METHODS: Individuals denied handgun purchase because of a prior felony conviction and handgun purchasers with a felony arrest at time of purchase were examined. C N Mock, Charles Mock et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 14

OBJECTIVES. Strategies for injury prevention have been extensively studied in developed nations but not in the developing world. This study sought to determine which mechanisms of injury were common in a rural developing area and which were important contributors to mortality and disability. METHODS. All 614 patients admitted for injuries to a rural African hospital between 1987 and 1991 were analyzed retrospectively for mechanism of injury and o…

  • The cost and frequency of hospitalization for fall-related injuries in older adults

    Bruce H Alexander, F P Rivara et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 8•References: 12

Using a population-based hospital discharge registry with E codes, we examine the 1989 hospitalizations of older adults in Washington State for fall-related injuries. Fall-related trauma accounted for 5.3% of all hospitalizations of older adults, with hospital charges totaling $53,346,191, and resulted in discharge to nursing care more often than other such hospitalizations. An annual hospitalization rate of 13.5 per 1000 persons and an annual co…

  • Occupational injuries among minors doing farm work in Washington State

    N J Heyer, 竹民 欒 et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 6

BACKGROUND. There is growing evidence that many children are injured while engaged in agricultural work. However, little specific information on farm work-related injuries among minors is available, probably because employment or workers' compensation data for children are hard to obtain. METHODS. Workers' compensation data were used to evaluate occupational injuries among children in Washington State from 1986 through 1989. The frequency and sev…

  • A case-control study of the effectiveness of bicycle safety helmets in preventing facial injury

    D C Thompson, R Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In a case-control study we sought to assess the potential effectiveness of helmets in preventing facial injuries. Our study included 212 bicyclists with facial injuries and 319 controls with injuries to other body areas, who were treated in emergency rooms of five Seattle area hospitals over a one-year period. Using regression analyses to control for age, sex, education and income, accident severity, and cycling experience we found no definite ef…

  • Population-based study of unintentional injury incidence and impact during childhood

    F P Rivara, Ned Calonge et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 9

We report a prospective study of medically treated unintentional injuries ascertained in an HMO population of children and adolescents 19 years of age and younger over a one-year period. The overall rate of medically treated injuries was 247 per 1,000, 147/1,000 for those treated in the clinic, and 100/1,000 for those treated in the emergency room (ER). Overall, 2.5 percent of patients were hospitalized. The highest rates of injury were for falls…
