Current diplomates are concentrated in academia. If this trend continues, it may be necessary to restructure the competencies, so training and skills acquisition remain timely and relevant. The specialty may also need to encourage future generations to consider non-academic positions so Dental Public Health remains an impactful component of the public health care system

    Open Access•Mark D Macek, K A Atchison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2017

  • Assessing health literacy and oral health

    Open Access•Mark D Macek, K A Atchison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2016

Our analysis showed that dental school patients exhibit a range of health literacy abilities. It also revealed that the relationship between health literacy and oral health is not straightforward, depending on patient characteristics and the unique circumstances of the encounter. We anticipate future analyses of MOHLRS data will answer questions about the role that health literacy and various mediating factors play in explaining oral health dispa…

  • Dental service mix among older adults aged 65 and over, U nited S tates, 1999 and 2009

Open Access•Richard J Manski, LEONARD A COHEN et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2014

Findings point to a shift in the mix of dental services received by older adults during the two periods. The predominance of diagnostic and preventive procedures has important access and workforce implications. An expanded role for dental hygienists in helping to meet the oral health needs of older adults is possible given a hygienist's current scope of practice

Open Access•Richard J Manski, Clemencia M Vargas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2014

The vast majority of procedures received by children from birth to 20 years were diagnostic and preventive. Most children with at least one dental visit received a diagnostic or preventive service. Between 1999 and 2009, the proportion of all services received accounted for by diagnostic or preventive services increased. However, the proportion in which each type of procedure was received by children who made at least one visit who received did n…

  • Dental service mix among working‐age adults in the U nited S tates, 1999 and 2009

Open Access•Richard J Manski, Mark D Macek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2013

Preventive-type procedures represented the vast majority of dental services received by working-age adults in 2009. Between 1999 and 2009, receipt of preventive-type procedures generally increased while receipt of surgical-type procedures decreased. These findings emphasize the health-promoting role of the dental team and provide a baseline for the measurement of future trends

  • Oral cancer examinations among smokers and moderate‐heavy drinkers, U nited S tates, 2008

    Open Access•Mark D Macek, Janet A Yellowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2013

Current smokers did not receive OCEs at a rate consistent with their increased risk, whereas moderate-heavy drinkers did. One explanation for this finding is that medical and dental visit behaviors indirectly influenced OCE rates. Dentition status played an important role, as having teeth is strongly associated with dental visit behaviors. Health-care practitioners are encouraged to consider the smoking and drinking statuses of their patients whe…

Open Access•Mark D Macek, Don Haynes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2010

This preliminary study yielded a new measure of oral health conceptual knowledge, available for use in future oral health literacy studies. The author presents a conceptual framework of oral health literacy that separates health literacy into four unique components and places decision-making at the center. Future studies are needed to determine whether this framework is supported by empirical data and leads to improvements in oral health and redu…

  • Dental Care Visits among Dentate Adults with Diabetes and Periodontitis

    Open Access•Mark D Macek, Scott L Tomar•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2009

These data revealed that dental care visits for dentate adults with diabetes were unrelated to their periodontal health, suggesting that fear of periodontal therapy did not influence visit patterns. These data also showed that dental care visit disparities existed for all adults with diabetes, not just women. Future research should investigate whether factors that are indirectly related to diabetes status, such as competing costs, attitudes, and …

  • Dental Care Visits among Dentate Adults with Diabetes, United States, 2003

Open Access•Mark D Macek, George W Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2008

Having diabetes is associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes, including periodontitis. Adults with diabetes would benefit from regular health care visits to address these concerns, but this report shows that women with diabetes are underutilizing dental care services. The underutilization may be a result of the barriers to dental care that disproportionately affect women. Additional research should test the plausibility of these explan…

  • Coping with Toothache Pain

Open Access•LEONARD A COHEN, Shelly L Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2007

Although removing financial barriers alone may not lead to preventive dental visits, it would facilitate more timely visits to dentists to treat toothache pain

These analyses help to describe the needs of older adults as they cope with diminishing resources as a…
