Use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) in China: Evidence from Citywide Representative Surveys from Five Chinese Cities in 2018
China is the largest cigarette consuming country in the world. The emergence of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) in China may have important implications for the Chinese tobacco market. Unfortunately, research on ENDS in China, while growing, is still limited. This study was designed to examine the awareness and use of ENDS among adult urban residents in China. Data from five citywide representative surveys conducted in 2017-2018 were …
Sociodemographic Correlates of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) Use in the United States, 2016–2017
Objectives. To investigate use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) among priority populations. Methods. Using 2016 through 2017 US nationally representative surveys (n = 11 688), we examined ENDS use by sociodemographic variables (age, education, poverty status, insurance, employment, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation) and combustible tobacco use. Results. Among individuals who currently use noncigarette combustible tobacco, those fro…
Awareness and use of heated tobacco products among US adults, 2016–2017
Awareness and use of HTP in the USA are increasing. These products are more familiar to men and younger adults and may be being used disproportionately by racial/ethnic minorities. With increases in HTP availability and the potential for reduced-risk claims ahead, surveillance of patterns and consequences of use by both smokers and non-smokers is needed
Worldviews and trust of sources for health information on electronic nicotine delivery systems: Effects on risk perceptions and use
Public health agencies, the news media, and the tobacco/vapor industry have issued contradictory statements about the health effects of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). We investigated the levels of trust that consumers place in different information sources and how trust is associated with cultural worldviews, risk perceptions, ENDS use, and sociodemographic characteristics using a nationally representative sample of 6051 U.S. adults…
Regretting Ever Starting to Smoke: Results from a 2014 National Survey
Background : The majority of smokers regret ever starting to smoke, yet the vast majority continue to smoke despite the fact that smoking kills nearly 50% of lifetime users. This study examined the relationships between regret and smoker characteristics, quit history, risk perceptions, experiential thinking, and beliefs and intentions at time of smoking initiation. Methods : Data from the 2014 Tobacco Products and Risk Perceptions Survey, a natio…
Prevalence and Factors Associated with Smokeless Tobacco Use, 2014-2016
The prevalence of current STP use peaked in 2015. In 2016, current STP use was more prevalent among males and adults with lower education. Continuous monitoring of STP use is needed, particularly non-cigarette tobacco product users
Reassessing the importance of ‘lost pleasure’ associated with smoking cessation: Implications for social welfare and policy
The proportion of smokers who might be characterised as having a preference to continue smoking are greatly outnumbered by addicted, discontent and concerned smokers who want to quit and regret ever having started to smoke. These discontent smokers could have a substantial net welfare gain if new regulations helped them escape their concerns about the health effects from continuing smoking
Use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems among Adults with Mental Health Conditions, 2015
Adults with mental health conditions (MHC) are especially likely to smoke and experience tobacco-related health disparities. Individuals with MHC may also use electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS) at disproportionately high rates. However, there is a relative dearth of knowledge regarding ENDS use among individuals with MHC. In a large representative sample of U.S. adults ( n = 6051), associations between self-reported MHC diagnoses and END…
The Role of Cities in Reducing Smoking in China
China is the epicenter of the global tobacco epidemic. China grows more tobacco, produces more cigarettes, makes more profits from tobacco and has more smokers than any other nation in the world. Approximately one million smokers in China die annually from diseases caused by smoking, and this estimate is expected to reach over two million by 2020. China cities have a unique opportunity and role to play in leading the tobacco control charge from t…
Factors associated with support for smoke-free policies among government workers in Six Chinese cities: A cross-sectional study
Government workers play important roles in formulating, implementing and enforcing regulations; results suggest support for a more comprehensive approach to smoke-free environments in China among workers across a broad range of agencies
The value of research as a component of successful tobacco control in China
Research has been shown to be a critical component of successful national tobacco control programmes. China currently has a small number of dedicated researchers addressing tobacco use and control. We encourage the growth of tobacco research as an academic and governmental field of inquiry. Such research would include multiple foci: biologic and toxicologic, epidemiologic, economic, health promotion, evaluation, policy and regulatory, and legal. …
Smoking behaviours and cessation services among male physicians in China: Evidence from a structural equation model
The smoke-free policy is not strictly implemented at healthcare facilities, and smoking remains a public health problem among male physicians. A holistic approach, including a stricter implementation of the smoke-free policy, comprehensive education on the hazards of smoking, training in standard smoking-cessation techniques and provision of cessation resources, is needed to curb the smoking epidemic among male physicians and to promote smoking c…
Are Asians at greater mortality risks for being overweight than Caucasians? Redefining obesity for Asians
Objectives To assess whether overweight Asians, assessed on the basis of WHO criteria, are at greater mortality risk than overweight Caucasians, and to determine whether alternative cut-off points (BMI = 23·0–24·9 kg/m 2 for overweight and BMI ≥ 25·0 kg/m 2 for obesity) suggested by the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office are appropriate. Design The cohort was followed prospectively until the end of 2001. All-cause and CVD mortality risks of the …
Paradoxical increase in cigarette smuggling after the market opening in Taiwan
Taiwan showed a sharp increase in smuggling after market liberalisation. Being excluded from the international community, Taiwan faces an uphill battle to fight smuggling alone. If Taiwan remained as its weakest link, global efforts to reduce tobacco use will be undermined, particularly for countries in the East Asian region
The impact of the cigarette market opening in Taiwan
The opening of the cigarette market in 1987 had a long lasting impact on Taiwan. It increased smoking prevalence and the market has become dominated by foreign companies. The seriousness of smuggling and its associated loss of revenue by the government, the extent of increased youth smoking and its associated future health care costs, and the increased use of betel quid and the associated doubling of oral cancer mortality rates each pose signific…

The relationship between cigarette smoking and education revisited: Implications for categorizing persons' educational status
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to reassess the relationship between cigarette smoking and education. METHODS: Data from the 1983 to 1991 National Health Interview Survey for participants aged 25 years and older were used to plot the prevalence of current smoking, ever smoking, heavy smoking, and smoking cessation, as well as the adjusted log odds ratios, by years of education. RESULTS: The "less than high school graduate" category consisted of two …

Correspondence to : Dr Michael Siegel, Office on Smoking and Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mailstop K50, 4770 Buford Highway, NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30341, USA Abstract Background There is some evidence that smokers may face an increased risk of lung cancer from environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure. We con sidered the possibility that policies ex posing smokers to high ETS levels in smoking lounges may have an adverse ef…
