  • Differences in influenza testing and treatment in micropolitan versus metropolitan areas in the U.S. using medicare claims data from 2010 to 2016

Open Access•Alexia Couture, F Scott Dahlgren et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our study found lower testing and higher treatment in U.S. metropolitan versus micropolitan areas from 2010 to 2016 for those aged 65 years and older in our population. Identifying differences in influenza rates by rurality may improve public health response. Further research into the relationship of rurality and health disparities is needed

  • Covid-19 symptomatic community illness, hospitalization, and death burden across all ages — New South Wales, Australia, May 2021–July 2022

    Open Access•Kelsey M Sumner, Sandra J Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Estimated symptomatic case hospitalization and fatality risk could be used for COVID-19 modelling and forecasting

  • State-Level Influenza Hospitalization Burden in the United States, 2022–2023

Alexia Couture, A Danielle Iuliano et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Objectives. To develop a method leveraging hospital-based surveillance to estimate influenza-related hospitalizations by state, age, and month as a means of enhancing current US influenza burden estimation efforts. Methods. Using data from the Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv-NET), we extrapolated monthly FluSurv-NET hospitalization rates after adjusting for testing practices and diagnostic test sensitivities to non-FluSurv…

  • Community Mitigation Guidelines to Prevent Pandemic Influenza — United States, 2017

Open Access•Noreen Qualls, Alexandra Levitt et al.•ARTICLE•MMWR. Surveillance Summaries•2017

When a novel influenza A virus with pandemic potential emerges, nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) often are the most readily available interventions to help slow transmission of the virus in communities, which is especially important before a pandemic vaccine becomes widely available. NPIs, also known as community mitigation measures, are actions that persons and communities can take to help slow the spread of respiratory virus infections, i…

  • Predictors of Active Injection Drug Use in a Cohort of Patients Infected With Hepatitis C Virus

Carrie Reed, Juan Lucio et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•References: 42

Objectives. We investigated potential risk factors for active injection drug use (IDU) in an inner-city cohort of patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Methods. We used log-binomial regression to identify factors independently associated with active IDU during the first 3 years of follow-up for the 289 participants who reported ever having injected drugs at baseline. Results. Overall, 142 (49.1%) of the 289 participants reported active …

  • Parallel Worlds, Stretched Time, and Illusory Reality: The Tang Tale “Du Zichun”

Carrie Reed•ARTICLE•Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies•2009

Focusing on the Tang-dynasty tale “Du Zichun” and comparing it with foreign and Chinese analogues in which the protagonist takes an allegorical inner journey only to return to his own world and time, C arrie R eed explores treatments of the notion of illusory reality. She argues that the treatment of time as stretched in “Du Zichun” closely resembles that in certain Indian tales and may have derived not from written translations of Buddhist texts…

  • "Motivation and Meaning of a "Hodge-podge: "Duan Chengshi's "Youyang zazu

Carrie E Reed, Carrie Reed•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2003

With the compilation of the work that he named Youyang zazu NW ]S*?f (Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang), the erudite scholar, traveler, and chronicler Duan Chengshi g together, these elements produce a collection that seems familiar and yet is somehow perplexing. The collection has been largely ignored, particularly as a literary text, in both Western and Chinese Sinology. One reason for this is that in large part scholars have treated the coll…

  • Chinese Chronicles of the Strange: "The "Nuogao ji

Noriko T Reider, Carrie E Reed et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Folklore Studies•2002

Nuogao ji (Records of Nuogao) is the title of five juan of the ninth-century miscellany entitled Youyang zazu, by Duan Chengshi (c. 800-863). Nuogao ji is made up of anecdotes and notices that focus on the strange or supernatural. Simultaneously reminiscent of earlier zhiguai works and characteristic of Tang xiaoshuo writing, this book is an important text for the study of both change and continuity in Chinese informal narratives. This is the fir…

  • Tattoo in Early China

Carrie E Reed, Carrie Reed•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2000•Cited by: 4

The paper introduces various modes of tattoo as described in several types of pre-modern Chinese texts. Although the study takes a widely cross-temporal view, covering texts from the Zhou to the Ming dynasties, its organizing focus is the twenty-five entries on tattoo found in the ninth-century miscellany, Youyang zazu. The author of this work, Duan Chengshi (c. 800-863), is remarkable because of his extraordinary interest in all types of tattoo,…
