Open Access•Anita L Wolfe, Mary Anne Roach et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in conflict zones are at high risk of sexual and physical violence due to instability, stigma and proximity to military personnel. Given sustained ongoing conflict, this study evaluated the relationship between displacement and gender-based violence (GBV), including experiences of sexual violence, abuse by healthcare workers and reproductive coercion among WLHIV in Ukraine. • Place-based communication methods and prior knowledge increase public perceptions regarding West Nile virus risk and personal protective behaviors in Colorado

    Open Access•Shelby M Cagle, Cheyenne M Schad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

This study suggests that public health organizations could utilize place-based information regarding real-time, real-place risk to guide public health decision-making during emergence of vector-borne infectious diseases. Additionally, there appears to be a synergy of messaging with a beneficial effect of pre-existing knowledge, highlighting the need for diverse, longitudinal messaging strategies to reach people multiple times

  • Comparative Respiratory Morbidity of Former and Current US Coal Miners

Cara N Halldin, Anita L Wolfe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•References: 11

We compared the prevalence of respiratory disease in former and current US coal miners using chest radiographs and lung functions collected from 2009 to 2013 among miners of the Appalachian and Interior US coalfields. We calculated prevalence ratios (PRs) of pneumoconiosis and impaired lung function. Significantly higher prevalences of pneumoconiosis (PR = 1.5; 95% confidence interval = 1.2, 2.0) and impaired lung function were observed among for…

  • Potential Determinants of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis, Advanced Pneumoconiosis, and Progressive Massive Fibrosis Among Underground Coal Miners in the United States, 2005–2009

A Scott Laney, Edward L Petsonk et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Objectives. We better defined the distribution and determinants of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) among US underground coal miners. Methods. We obtained chest radiographs from the mobile unit of an enhanced surveillance program begun in 2005 by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for underground coal miners. B Readers classified them for presence of pneumoconiosis. Results. Miners from 15 states participated (n = 6658). …
