  • Diet, indicators of kidney disease, and later mortality among older persons in the NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-Up Study

    Johanna T Dwyer, J H Madans et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•References: 14

OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this study was to determine whether diet adversely affected survival among 2572 older persons with indicators of kidney disease in a population-based cohort. Average follow-up time for survivors, of whom 1453 (57%) had died at analysis, was 14.5 years. METHODS. Kidney disease indicators were a "yes" response to "Has a doctor ever told you that you have kidney disease or renal stones?" and/or trace or greater amounts of …

  • Predictors of smoking cessation and relapse in older adults

    Marcel E Salive, J Cornoni-Huntley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 3

We examined longitudinal changes in smoking behavior among older adults in three community cohorts of the Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly. Smoking prevalence declined from 15% at baseline to 9% during 6 years of follow-up. Annual smoking cessation and relapse rates were 10% and less than 1%, respectively. Interval diagnosis of myocardial infarction, stroke, or cancer increased subsequent smoking cessation but not …

  • The relationship between hip fracture and water fluoridation

    J H Madans, J Madans et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1983•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Data from the 1973-1977 National Health Interview Surveys were used to determine whether water fluoridation prevents hip fractures related to osteoporosis. No protective effect was found for fluoride levels of 0.7 ppm, the level recommended for the prevention of dental caries. There are some indications that higher concentrations of fluoride might have a protective effect for groups with a high incidence of osteoporosis. However, no determination…
