Predictors of Retention in a Clinical Trial of a Fentanyl Overdose Prevention Intervention
BACKGROUND: Structural barriers can pose challenges to retaining people who use drugs in longitudinal research. This study assessed baseline characteristics associated with retention in a year-long clinical trial addressing whether fentanyl test strip provision decreased rates of nonfatal overdose among people who use drugs. METHODS: From September 2020 to February 2023, 505 participants enrolled in the year-long RAPIDS clinical trial. Outcome vi…
Sociodemographic Characteristics and Drug Use Practices Associated with Fentanyl Use Frequency Among People Who Use Drugs in Rhode Island
Background Since 2013, fentanyl has dominated unregulated drug supplies in the northeast and has become a key driver of overdose deaths. In this analysis, we sought to identify the characteristics associated with fentanyl use frequency among people who use drugs in Rhode Island. Methods We examined baseline data from the Rhode Island Prescription and Illicit Drug Study, which enrolled participants from August 2020 to February 2023. We used an ordi…
Fentanyl test strip use and homelessness among people who use drugs in Rhode Island
We found that housing status was not independently and longitudinally associated with FTS use; however, people who used crystal methamphetamine were more than twice as likely to have used FTS in the past month. Future research exploring how differential housing situations may affect uptake of harm reduction services is needed to prevent fentanyl overdose
Receipt of Prescription Psychostimulants and Stimulant-Involved Fatal Overdose
Background: Rates of psychostimulant use, misuse, and hospitalization have increased markedly over the past decade. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between receipt of a psychostimulant prescription in the past year and fatal, unintentional psychostimulant-involved overdose. Methods: We conducted a population-based case-control study using linked, state-level databases from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Cases w…
Initiation of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among youth in the United States, 2015–2018
Adolescents and young adults ("youth") account for one-fifth of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which became FDA approved in adolescents in May 2018, is highly effective at preventing HIV infection though there are limited data for PrEP initiation in youth. We aimed to quantify PrEP initiation and identify factors associated with PrEP initiation among youth at risk for HIV. We conducted a retrospective cohort st…

Adverse School Outcomes and Risky Sexual Health Behaviors among High School Students with E-Cigarette and Marijuana Use
Background While several health risks of e-cigarette and marijuana use have been described, little is known about their associations with school-related outcomes and risky sexual behaviors in adolescents. Objectives: To determine the odds of adverse school outcomes and risky sexual behaviors among youth with single or dual use of e-cigarettes and marijuana. Methods: We used data from the 2015 and 2017 waves of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a na…

Prevalence and Correlates of Depressive Symptomology among Young Adults Who Use Prescription Opioids Non-medically
Non-medical prescription opioid (NMPO) use and depression frequently co-occur and are mutually reinforcing in adults, yet NMPO use and depression in younger populations has been under-studied. We examined the prevalence and correlates of depressive symptomology among NMPO-using young adults. The Rhode Island Young Adult Prescription Drug Study (RAPiDS) recruited young adults in Rhode Island who reported past 30-day NMPO use. We administered the C…

Industry Payments to Physicians for Opioid Products, 2013–2015
Objectives. To identify payments that involved opioid products from the pharmaceutical industry to physicians. Methods. We used the Open Payments program database from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to identify payments involving an opioid to physicians between August 2013 and December 2015. We used medians, interquartile ranges, and ranges as a result of heavily skewed distributions to examine payments according to opioid product…
Harm reduction for young people who use prescription opioids extra-medically
Industry Payments to Physicians for Opioid Products, 2013–2015
