    Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•Critical Inquiry•2026

  • Intermittent Grids

    Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 4

Today in the developed world, even among those most committed to decarbonization, intermittency (let alone massive disruption) of the grid is simply unthinkable. Demand for (clean) electricity is growing all over the globe. This essay summons images, strategies, and tactics from Italy of the 1960s to help think about the (electrical) grid in the time of climate change. To be sure, theorists, activists, and artists associated with radical movement…

  • Ambiguity, Ambience, Ambivalence, and the Environment

    Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•Common Knowledge•2013•Cited by: 1

In this contribution to the Common Knowledge symposium "Fuzzy Studies: On the Consequence of Blur," the words ambiguity, ambivalence, and ambience are shown to share the common prefix, from Latin, ambi-, defined in most modern dictionaries as "around, on both sides." Ambi captures some, but not all, so Leo Spitzer has argued, of the multiple senses (physical surrounding, spiritual embrace, air) that Greeks infused into the prefix peri. Ambiguity …

  • Carbon Management: A Gift of Time

    Open Access•Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•Oxford Literary Review•2010•Cited by: 2

Rather than a radical realignment of energy sources or usage, ‘carbon management’ appears as unassailably practical; a gift to future generations. This essay calls on deconstructive and impractical thinking to dislodge the security of carbon management as inadequate to the chaotic and unfathomable temporality of climate change

  • On Climate, Cars, and Literary Theory

    Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2008•Cited by: 4

Climate change mitigation discourse often centers around decadal timescales, human consumption, and that privileged object of human consumption, the automobile. Invoking literary theory, this essay insists that it is only by undoing certainty, by embracing unfathomability, and by realizing the irreconcilability of the human and the geologic-by thinking otherwise-that we can truly begin to address climate change

  • Zones of Exception: Biopolitical Territories in the Neoliberal Era

    Gabriel Giorgi, Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•diacritics•2006

"Zones of Exception: Biopolitical Territories of the Neoliberal Era" explores the biopolitical in Roberto Esposito together with the notion of exception in Giorgio Agamben to think diverse scenarios of social, economic, and cultural conflict of the neoliberal era. Focusing on the Argentine piqueteros and the clandestini at the Centers of Temporary Permanence in Italy, we discuss how the economic rationality of neoliberal rule both produces "bare …

Giorgio Agamben, Karen Pinkus et al.•BOOK•Language and Death•2006

Explores the symbiosis of philosophy and literature in understanding negativity.

  • Bodily Regimes: Italian Advertising under Fascism

    Luca Somigli, Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•Italica•1998

  • Self-Representation in Futurism and Punk

    Open Access•Karen Pinkus•ARTICLE•South Central Review•1996

The following is a series of remarks on the photographic portrait of the Futurist/Punk artist. Can the photograph strive to constitute representation when it always already becomes immediately selfrepresentation inasmuch as the camera remains potentially in the technical grasp of the subject? Photography is permeated by the dominant model of the amateur snapshot, even when a particular photographer is taken in a professional context. We could ind…
