  • Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Initiation in Boys Before and Since Routine Use

Rulin C Hechter, Chun R Chao et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•References: 14

Objectives. We examined the trends and correlates of quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV4) initiation in insured boys during the periods before and after routine use recommendation. Methods. We grouped data from electronic medical records of boys aged 9 to 17 years from the Kaiser Permanente Southern California prepaid health plan into 3 open cohorts: permissive use: 2009 to 2010; anal cancer indication added: 2010 to 2011; and routine…

  • Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Uptake in Adolescent Boys and Maternal Utilization of Preventive Care and History of Sexually Transmitted Infections

Rulin C Hechter, Chun Chao et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Objectives. We examined whether maternal utilization of preventive care and history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) predicted quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV4) uptake among adolescent boys 1 year following the recommendation for permissive use of HPV4 for males. Methods. We linked maternal information with electronic health records of 254 489 boys aged 9 to 17 years who enrolled in Kaiser Permanente Southern California he…

  • SP3-62 Agreement between medical record and parent report for evaluation of childhood febrile seizures

Bradley K Ackerson, B Ackerson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction Little is known about the quality of medical record data used to evaluate febrile seizures despite its influence on vaccine recommendations. Methods Parent report from phone interviews and mailed questionnaires was compared to abstracted medical records of 110 children with febrile seizures between ages 3 and 60 months. Concordance between parent report and medical records for characteristics and predisposing factors of febrile seizu…

  • P1-183 Influenza vaccination in prostate cancer survivors in the electronic health record era

    Steven J Jacobsen, J M Slezak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction While most men diagnosed with prostate cancer die from causes other than their cancer, many think that subsequent care focuses on their prostate cancer-related issues. We investigated whether influenza and pneumococcal vaccination practices were diminished in a cohort of men following their diagnosis of prostate cancer, in an environment that has implanted an electronic health record with multiple redundant reminders. Methods We used…

  • Papanicolaou Screening Behavior in Mothers and Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Uptake in Adolescent Girls

Chun Chao, Jeff M Slezak et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Objectives. We investigated whether maternal attitude toward prevention, as indicated by history of seeking Papanicolaou (Pap) tests and contracting sexually transmitted infections, influenced human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake among their adolescent daughters. Methods. We linked the electronic health records of girls aged 9 to 17 years with their mothers at Kaiser Permanente Southern California (n = 148 350 mother–daughter pairs). Persona…

  • Compliance With Multiple-Dose Vaccine Schedules Among Older Children, Adolescents, and Adults

    Jennifer C Nelson, Rachel C L Bittner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 25

Objectives. We studied compliance with multiple-dose vaccine schedules, assessed factors associated with noncompliance, and examined timeliness of series completion among older children, adolescents, and adults. Methods. We conducted a large, multisite, retrospective cohort study of older children, adolescents, and adults in the Vaccine Safety Datalink population from 1996 through 2004. We quantified the rates of completion of all required doses …

  • Hip fracture incidence among elderly Hispanics

Diane S Lauderdale, Steven J Jacobsen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 22

OBJECTIVES: This study estimated hip fracture incidence for elderly Hispanics in the United States. METHODS: A cohort of Spanish-surnamed 1992 Medicare enrollees was followed for 2 years. Hip fractures were identified by inpatient diagnostic code. RESULTS: For Hispanic women, the national age-adjusted hip fracture rate was 7.3 per 1000 person-years; for men, the rate was 3.3. Rates varied markedly, with higher rates for the predominantly Mexican-…

  • Hip fracture incidence before and after the fluoridation of the public water supply, Rochester, Minnesota

    Steven J Jacobsen, W Michael O’Fallon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•References: 21

Recent ecological comparison studies have suggested a positive association between fluoridation and hip fracture. Using data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, we found the incidence of hip fracture for the 10 years before the fluoridation of the Rochester, Minn, public water supply was 484 per 100,000, compared with 450 per 100,000 in the following 10 years. When the effects of calendar time and age were controlled for, the relative risk a…

  • Race and sex differences in mortality following fracture of the hip

Steven J Jacobsen, Jack Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 8

This paper describes the all-cause mortality experience, following a fracture of the hip, of 712,027 persons covered by the Medicare program from 1984 through 1987. White women experienced the lowest mortality rate (17.2 per 1000 person-months), followed by Black women (22.9 per 1000 person-months), Black men (33.5 per 1000 person-months), and White men (33.7 per 1000 person-months). The observed race-sex differences in survival were found at all…

  • Hip fracture incidence among the old and very old

Steven J Jacobsen, Jack Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 13•References: 9

Data were obtained from the Health Care Financing Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs (formerly called Veterans Administration) on all hospital discharges among the elderly population from 1984 through 1987 and combined with census estimates to calculate incidence rates of hip fracture for the elderly population of the United States. Rates for White women were the highest, reaching 35.4 per 1,000 per year among 95 year-olds. Com…

  • Hospital Characteristics and Mortality Rates

Arthur J Hartz, Henry Krakauer et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•1989

The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) publishes hospital mortality rates each year. We undertook a study to identify characteristics of hospitals associated with variations in these rates. To do so, we obtained data on 3100 hospitals from the 1986 HCFA mortality study and the American Hospital Association's 1986 annual survey of hospitals. The mortality rates were adjusted for each hospital's case mix and other characteristics of its pa…
