Health Benefits of Strategies for Carbon Mitigation in US Transportation, 2017‒2050
Objectives. To quantify health benefits and carbon emissions of 2 transportation scenarios that contrast optimum levels of physical activity from active travel and minimal air pollution from electric cars. Methods. We used data on burden of disease, travel, and vehicle emissions in the US population and a health impact model to assess health benefits and harms of physical activity from transportation-related walking and cycling, fine particulate …
Environmental Injustice and Industrial Chicken Farming in Maryland
Maryland’s growing chicken industry, including concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and meat processing plants, raises a number of concerns regarding public health and environmental justice. Using hot spot analysis, we analyzed the totality of Maryland’s CAFOs and meat processing plants and those restricted to the Eastern Shore to assess whether communities of color and/or low socioeconomic status communities disproportionately hosted t…
Global Population Exposed to Extreme Events in the 150 Most Populated Cities of the World: Implications for Public Health
Climate change driven increases in the frequency of extreme heat events (EHE) and extreme precipitation events (EPE) are contributing to both infectious and non-infectious disease burden, particularly in urban city centers. While the share of urban populations continues to grow, a comprehensive assessment of populations impacted by these threats is lacking. Using data from weather stations, climate models, and urban population growth during 1980-…
Food insecurity and compound environmental shocks in Nepal: Implications for a changing climate
Baseline Air Quality Assessment of Goods Movement Activities before the Port of Charleston Expansion: A Community–University Collaborative
As the demand for goods continues to increase, a collective network of transportation systems is required to facilitate goods movement activities. This study examines air quality near the Port of Charleston before its expansion and briefly describes the establishment and structure of a community-university partnership used to monitor existing pollution. Particulate matter (PM) concentrations (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ) were measured using the Thermo Fish…
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and Medical Students: Letter from China
Chinese medical students had good knowledge of MERS. The MERS knowledge score varied among students of different majors. Education on disease control should be included in the school curriculum
Cluster of Human Infections with Avian Influenza A (H7N9) Cases: A Temporal and Spatial Analysis
Our results suggested that the spatial-temporal clustering of H7N9 in China between 2013 and 2014 is fundamentally different
Environmental Justice Radar: A Tool for Community-Based Mapping to Increase Environmental Awareness and Participatory Decision Making
This article describes the development of the Environmental Justice (EJ) Radar, a PPGIS tool that provides stakeholders in South Carolina with a way to raise environmental awareness and improve citizen participation in local environmental decision-making. We describe the functionality of EJ Radar and discuss feedback received from stakeholders to improve the utility of the PPGIS tool
Use of Segregation Indices, Townsend Index, and Air Toxics Data to Assess Lifetime Cancer Risk Disparities in Metropolitan Charleston, South Carolina, USA
We found that material deprivation, measured by the Townsend Index and segregation measured by the Isolation index, introduced high impact on lifetime cancer risk by air toxics at the census tract level
Environmental justice disparities in Maryland's watershed restoration programs
Leaking Underground Storage Tanks and Environmental Injustice: Is There a Hidden and Unequal Threat to Public Health in South Carolina
There are approximately 590,000 underground storage tanks (USTs) nationwide that store petroleum or hazardous substances. Many of these tanks are leaking, which may increase the risk of exposure to contaminants that promote health problems in host neighborhoods. Within this study, we assessed disparities in the spatial distribution of leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs) based on socioeconomic status (SES) and race/ethnicity in South Carolin…
Assessment of Spatial Disparities in the Burden of Underground Storage Tanks in Maryland (2001–2011)
The presence of leaking underground storage tanks (LUST) may present environmental justice (EJ) concerns including groundwater contamination for communities with a number of USTs, other environmental hazards, and poor infrastructure. The purpose of this study is to assess ten years of residential LUST exposure data in Maryland across areas with varying sociodemographic composition. Methods: We linked ten years of site-specific LUST remediation da…
