Longitudinal study on quality of life following cervical cancer treatment in Botswana
PURPOSE: This study longitudinally assessed the quality of life (QoL) in patients who completed chemoradiation (CRT) for cervical cancer in Botswana and compared the QoL for those living with and without HIV infection. METHODS: Patients with cervical cancer recommended for curative CRT were enrolled from August 2016 to February 2020. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality-of-Life (QLQ-C30) and cervical cancer-…
The association of household food insecurity and HIV infection with common mental disorders among newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients in Botswana
Objective: To determine the association between food insecurity and HIV infection with depression and anxiety among new tuberculosis (TB) patients. Design: Our cross-sectional study assessed depression, anxiety and food insecurity with Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Zung Anxiety Self-Assessment Scale (ZUNG) and Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, respectively. Poisson regression models with robust variance were used to examine correlat…
Depression and delayed tuberculosis treatment initiation among newly diagnosed patients in Botswana
Comorbidity of tuberculosis (TB) and depression may lead to delayed TB treatment initiation. A cross-sectional study was conducted between January and December 2019 to examine the association between depression and delayed TB treatment initiation among newly diagnosed TB patients in Botswana. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the ZUNG self-rating anxiety scale to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively. Delayed TB treatm…
Info-gap management of public health Policy for TB with HIV-prevalence and epidemiological uncertainty
The info-gap framework is useful for managing model uncertainty and is attractive when uncertainties on model parameters are extreme. When a public health model underlies guidelines, info-gap decision theory provides valuable insight into the confidence of achieving agreed-upon goals
Using surveillance data to monitor entry into care of newly diagnosed HIV-infected persons
The time from HIV diagnosis to initial CD4 T cell count, CD4 T cell value and HIV viral load testing may be appropriate surveillance measures for evaluating entry into care, as well as performance outcomes for local public health departments' HIV testing programs. Case investigation performed by the public health department or case management by clinic staff was associated with increased and shorter time to entry into HIV medical care
Simplifying Consent Increases Hiv Testing and New Case Detection
We read with interest the impact of New York State's streamlined HIV testing consent procedures on HIV testing rates, and we were pleased to see that the results were consistent with our experience in San Francisco.1 However, we would like to correct an inaccuracy. Wing argued that the lack of a control group in our analysis decreased the strength of our conclusions. We had published a one-year follow up of our initial report in which we included…
Written Informed Consent and Hiv Testing Rates
Goldman et al. posit without empirical evidence that written informed consent is not a barrier to routine HIV testing.1 Our experience in San Francisco, California, suggests otherwise. In May 2006, the San Francisco Department of Public Health Medical Care System, which includes an acute care hospital, a long-term care facility, and more than 15 primary health care centers, eliminated the requirement for a separate written informed consent form f…
