  • Paternal smoking and birthweight in Shanghai

    Jinwen Zhang, J M Ratcliffe•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Cited by: 4•References: 11

OBJECTIVES. Although maternal active smoking has been established to be associated with fetal growth retardation, evidence of an effect of environmental tobacco smoke exposure on birthweight is still limited and inconclusive. This study addressed the relationship between prenatal environmental tobacco smoke exposure and birthweight and fetal growth retardation in Shanghai, China. METHODS. Data on 1785 full-term live-born normal infants of nonsmok…

  • Developmental and behavioural functions in young children with elevated blood lead levels

    J M Ratcliffe•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1977•References: 17

Blood lead levels in some pre-schoolchildren living near a lead works and particularly in some children with fathers employed at the lead works showed evidence of increased exposure. • Lead in human blood and in the environment near a battery factory

    W J Elwood, B E Clayton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1977•References: 5

Samples of blood, air, dust, soil, vegetation, and tap water were examined between 1973 and 1975 to determine whether a large battery factory (with a smelter) was contributing to lead in the environment and to lead absorption by the local population. Mean blood lead levels in the children of lead workers were about 6 μg/100 ml higher (P<0·001) than in otherwise comparable children. Capillary blood samples in wives of lead workers were 1·7 μg/100 …
