  • Developing WHO guidelines with pragmatic, structured, evidence-based processes

Open Access•Lee Chang, Caitlin E Kennedy et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2010

Many guidelines, including those produced by the World Health Organisation (WHO), have failed to adhere to rigorous methodological standards. Operational examples of guideline development processes may provide important lessons learned to improve the rigour and quality of future guidelines. To this end, this paper describes the process of developing WHO guidelines on prevention and care interventions for adults and adolescents living with HIV. Us…

  • Epidemiologic assessment of screening tests for antibody to human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)

    R F Khabbaz, Rima Khabbaz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•References: 15

We tested 196 sera from a human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) risk group (prostitute women) with two commercial "research" enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assays (EIA) for HTLV-I antibodies. All tested sera were characterized by HTLV-I Western immunoblots and by HTLV-I radioimmunoprecipitation assays. The estimated sensitivities of the EIA tests were 93.8 percent and 100 percent, and the specificities were 98.8 percent and 95.8 percent, resp…

  • The frequency of a Norwalk-like pattern of illness in outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis

    J E Kaplan, R Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1982•Cited by: 3

Records of 642 outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis were reviewed to determine the proportion of outbreaks that were clinically and epidemiologically consistent with Norwalk-like virus infection. Using as our criteria stool cultures negative for bacterial pathogens, mean (or median) duration of illness 12-60 hours, vomiting in greater than or equal to 50 per cent of cases, and, if known, mean (or median) incubation period of 24-48 hours, we found t…
