  • Plastic pollution hotspots: Global waste trade and environmental risk in Latin America

Open Access•Veronica Herrera, Paula Muñoz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2026

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental challenge, and Latin America is one of several Global South regions that have seen a rise in plastic waste imports. For 18 countries in the region, we combine a quantitative analysis of plastic scrap trade data (UN Comtrade) with an assessment of waste management capacity. Following China’s 2018 ban on plastic waste imports, Latin America saw increases in all types of plastic waste, and in particular, …

  • Prosecutors, Voters and the Criminalization of Corruption in Latin America: The Case of Lava Jato

    Open Access•Ezequiel González-Ocantos, Ezequiel A Gonzalez-Ocantos et al.•BOOK•Prosecutors, Voters and the…•2023

Lava Jato, a transnational bribery case that started in Brazil and spread throughout Latin America, upended elections and collapsed governments. Why did the investigation gain momentum in some countries but not others? The book traces reforms that enhanced prosecutors' capacity to combat white-collar crime and shows that Lava Jato became a full-blown anti-corruption crusade where reforms were coupled with the creation of aggressive taskforces. Fo…

  • Bribing and Social Desirability in Peru: A Mixed Methods Approach

Open Access•Viviana Baraybar Hidalgo, Yamilé Guibert et al.•ARTICLE•Colombia Internacional•2022•References: 49

Objective/Context: What could lead some individuals to be more prone to lie about engaging in corruption? We contend that a psychological approach to the study of corruption can be employed to understand who lies about corrupt behavior and why. Since social desirability bias (SDB) is related to the appropriateness of behavior, conflicting social norms in a context where corruption is widespread— like in several Latin American countries—can result…

  • Domestic isomorphic pressures in the design of FOI oversight institutions in Latin America

    Open Access•Rafael Piñeiro-Rodríguez, Paula Muñoz et al.•ARTICLE•Governance•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 28

Even though many countries in Latin America have adopted FOI Laws, there are significant differences in the institutional design of FOI oversight institutions. Most explanations highlight the role of political competition in motivating political actors to design strong de jure FOI oversight institutions. The design of FOI oversight institutions in Chile, Peru and Uruguay, however, cannot fully be explained by political competition. We show how is…

  • Latin America Erupts: Peru Goes Populist

    Open Access•Paula Muñoz•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2021•Cited by: 4

Peru's 2021 presidential election saw disaffected and discontented voters throwing their support behind antisystem outsider Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori. The 2021 election reflects the persistence of trends that have long characterized Peru's political system, most notably the extreme weakness of the country's political parties. To these trends were added a compound crisis comprising political, economic, and public-health dimensions that fur…

  • Peru: A Close Win for Continuity

Open Access•Eduardo Dargent, Eduardo Dargent Bocanegra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2016•Cited by: 15•References: 9

The April 2016 Peruvian election saw the triumph of former finance minister Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) in the close runoff against Keiko Fujimori, daughter of authoritarian president Alberto Fujimori (1990–2000). This election raises interesting questions for students of democracy that we aim to answer in this article: What explains the strength and endurance of fujimorismo sixteen years after the collapse of this competitive authoritarian regim…

  • Democracy against Parties? Party System Deinstitutionalization in Colombia

Open Access•Eduardo Dargent Bocanegra, Paula Muñoz•ARTICLE•Journal of Politics in Latin…•2011•Cited by: 29•References: 13

This article argues that in Colombia, decentralization and electoral reforms adopted in the late 1980s and in the 1991 Constitution – designed to improve democratic quality – brought about a gradual deinstitutionalization of this country's traditional party system as an unintended consequence. Building upon resource-based theories of party configuration, we contend that in developing countries, where resources are usually crucial for party aggreg…
