Neuropsychological Status of Heroin Users Undergoing Methadone Maintenance in Harm Reduction Program and Therapeutic Community
Q fever
Between 2007 and 2010, the Netherlands experienced an unprecedented outbreak of Q fever of more than 4000 human cases. Q fever infections of dairy goats, leading to abortion waves, were considered to be the cause of this outbreak. Measures to combat the outbreak had to be taken based on limited scientific knowledge and were aimed at the interruption of the infection cycle. Next to a notification obligation, hygienic and manure measures were made …
Disassortative sexual mixing among migrant populations in the Netherlands
To gain insight into the transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) among large migrant groups in The Netherlands, we studied the associations between their demographic and sexual characteristics, in particular condom use, and their sexual mixing patterns with other ethnic groups. In 2002-2005, cross-sectional surveys were conducted among migrants from Surinam (Afro- and Hindo-), the Netherlands Antilles, Cape Verde, and Ghana a…
Use of surface water in drinking water production associated with municipal Legionnaires’ disease incidence
STUDY OBJECTIVES: Given an observed geographical variation in Legionnaires' disease incidence in The Netherlands, the aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that the type of drinking water production was an independent determinant of the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. DESIGN: For the 1987-2005 period, the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in The Netherlands and the price of water as a proxy for production type was studied at the munici…
HIV testing behaviour among heterosexual migrants in Amsterdam
This cross-sectional study among heterosexual migrant groups in south-eastern Amsterdam, the city area where the largest migrant groups live, provides an insight into HIV testing behaviour in this particular group. Participants were recruited at street locations (May 1997-July 1998) and interviewed using structured questionnaires. They also donated saliva for HIV testing. In total, 705 males and 769 females were included in this study (Afro-Surin…
Large decline in injecting drug use in Amsterdam, 1986–1998
OBJECTIVES: To study community wide trends in injecting prevalence and trends in injecting transitions, and determinants. DESIGN: Open cohort study with follow up every four months (Amsterdam Cohort Study). Generalised estimating equations were used for statistical analysis. SETTING: Amsterdam has adopted a harm reduction approach as drug policy. PARTICIPANTS: 996 drug users who were recruited from 1986 to 1998, mainly at methadone programmes, wh…
Socio-economic and demographic characteristics and HIV-1 infection among female commercial sex workers in Thailand
To identify socio-economic and demographic factors related to prevalent HIV-1 infection among female commercial sex workers (CSW) in Thailand oral interviews and blood samples were taken from 800 female commercial sex workers in northern and southern Thailand during a cross-sectional survey in 1992. The overall HIV-1 prevalence rate was 22% and showed a statistically significant decrease from 36% when the age at start of commercial sex work was b…

Injecting risk behavior among drug users in Amsterdam, 1986 to 1992, and its relationship to Aids prevention programs
OBJECTIVES. Serial, cross-sectional trends in injecting risk behavior were studied among drug users from 1986 to 1992. METHODS. From a cohort study in Amsterdam, 616 intake visits of drug users who had injected in the 6 months preceding intake were selected. RESULTS. The proportion of drug users who reported borrowing and lending used injection equipment and reusing needles/syringes (in the previous 6 months), continuously declined from 51% to 20…
HIV prevalence and risk behavior among injecting drug users who participate in "low-threshold" methadone programs in Amsterdam
INTRODUCTION. After the onset of the HIV epidemic, the hope arose that the "harm reduction" approach of the Amsterdam "low-threshold" methadone programs would have a function in controlling the spread of HIV among injecting drug users (IDUs). METHODS. To find evidence for this assumption, 386 IDUs participating in an HIV study between 1985 and 1989 were studied. Long-term regular participants in low-threshold methadone programs were compared with…

Limited changes in sexual behaviour of heterosexual men and women with multiple partners in the Netherlands
To study changes in sexual behaviour, heterosexuals with multiple sexual partners were recruited through an STD-clinic and asked to return every 4 months for follow-up. Between October 1987 and June 1989, 512 heterosexuals entered the study and 140 men and 200 women had at least one follow-up visit. No changes were found between 3 visits in the kind of sexual techniques practiced. Condom use during vaginal intercourse with commercial partners (pr…
The course of the HIV epidemic among intravenous drug users in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
To determine if behavioral changes in intravenous drug users in Amsterdam have retarded the HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) epidemic in this group in recent years, we report that: HIV-antibody seroprevalence in annual samples of injectors has been constant over the years 1986-89; HIV-antibody incidence in a cohort of injectors appears to have decreased from 1986 to 1987 and stabilized after that until 1989; acute hepatitis B incidence in all d…
Risk reduction among intravenous drug users in Amsterdam under the influence of Aids
We evaluated the impact of a needle/syringe exchange program among 263 drug users in the period December 1985 to April 1988. Participants in this study were asked about their risk-behavior at three different visits. We found no increase in the proportion injecting drugs or in the frequency of intravenous drug use. A strong decrease in borrowing and lending of used needle/syringes was found and this behavioral change was not dependent on learning …
Impact of HIV antibody testing on changes in sexual behavior among homosexual men in The Netherlands
Between October 1984 and May 1986, 746 homosexual men, living in and around Amsterdam, The Netherlands, were surveyed at three consecutive six months periods regarding their sexual behavior. At the start of the study all subjects, of whom 234 (31 per cent) were HIV-Ab seropositive, were informed about their HIV antibody status. Seropositives initially reported more sexual partners than seronegatives; they also showed a greater reduction in the nu…
