  • Heterogeneity of Falls Among Older Adults: Implications for Public Health Prevention

    Jennifer L Kelsey, Elizabeth Procter-Gray et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 38

Objectives. We examined risk factors for falls among older people according to indoor and outdoor activity at the time of the fall and explored risk factors for seriously injurious falls. Methods. Data came from MOBILIZE Boston, a prospective cohort study of 765 community-dwelling women and men, mainly aged 70 years or older. Over 4.3 years, 1737 falls were recorded, along with indoor or outdoor activity at the time of the fall. Results. Particip…

  • Small-Area Estimation and Prioritizing Communities for Tobacco Control Efforts in Massachusetts

Wenjun Li, Thomas Land et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 23

Objectives. We developed a method to evaluate geographic and temporal variations in community-level risk factors and prevalence estimates, and used that method to identify communities in Massachusetts that should be considered high priority communities for smoking interventions. Methods. We integrated individual-level data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 1999 to 2005 with community-level data in Massachusetts. We used sma…

  • Small-Area Estimation and Prioritizing Communities for Obesity Control in Massachusetts

Wenjun Li, Jennifer L Kelsey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 36

Objectives. We developed a method to evaluate geographic and temporal variations in community-level obesity prevalence and used that method to identify communities in Massachusetts that should be considered high priority communities for obesity control. Methods. We developed small-area estimation models to estimate community-level obesity prevalence among community-living adults 18 years or older. Individual-level data from the Behavioral Risk Fa…

  • Influence of Musculoskeletal Conditions on Oral Health Among Older Adults

    Jennifer L Kelsey, Ira B Lamster•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•References: 52

Both musculoskeletal disorders and diseases of the oral cavity are common and potentially serious problems among older persons, yet little attention has been given to the links between them. Several musculoskeletal diseases, including osteoporosis, Paget’s disease, and arthritic disorders, may directly involve the oral cavity and contiguous structures. Drugs used to treat musculoskeletal diseases, including corticosteroids and bisphosphonates, in…

  • Associations Between Body Composition, Anthropometry, and Mortality in Women Aged 65 Years and Older

Chantal Matkin Dolan, Chantal Dolan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 37

Objectives. We examined the relation between measures of body size and mortality in a predominantly White cohort of 8029 women aged 65 years and older who were participating in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures. Methods. Body composition measures (fat and lean mass and percentage body fat) were calculated by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Anthropometric measures were body mass index (BMI; kg/m 2 ) and waist circumference. Results. During 8 y…

  • Outdoor Falls Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A Neglected Public Health Problem

Wenjun Li, Theresa H M Keegan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 47

Objectives. Although risk factors for indoor falls among older individuals have been well studied, little is known about the etiology of outdoor falls. We examined risk factors for outdoor falls among middle-aged and older adults. Methods. We analyzed data on the most recent fall during the past year among participants aged 45 years and older in the control group (N=2193) of a case–control study of fractures. The study was conducted at 5 Northern…

  • Immigration and Acculturation in Relation to Health and Health-Related Risk Factors Among Specific Asian Subgroups in a Health Maintenance Organization

Scarlett Lin Gomez, Jennifer L Kelsey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Cited by: 26•References: 40

Objectives. We sought to determine how risk factors for disease vary among Asian subgroups. Methods. Using data from a case–control study conducted at Northern California Kaiser Medical Centers (from 1996 to 2001), we compared prevalence of selected risk factors among Asian subgroups and evaluated the associations of these risk factors with sociodemographic factors. Results. Chinese and Japanese patients had a lower body mass index (kg/m 2 ) than…

  • Home hazards and falls in the elderly: The role of health and functional status

Mary E Northridge, Michael C Nevitt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 20

OBJECTIVES. This study was undertaken to determine whether vigorous and frail older people who identify environmental hazards in their homes have an increased risk for falls. METHODS. A 1-year prospective study was conducted among 266 female and 59 male community-dwelling volunteers aged 60 to 93 years who had fallen at least once during the previous year. Composite measures of home safety and of frailty were derived using principal components an…

  • The Measurement of Social Class in Epidemiology

  • Epidemiology of premenstrual symptoms

    C A Boyle, Gertrud S Berkowitz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 8

We examined the prevalence of selected premenstrual symptoms among 520 Connecticut women in relation to demographic, reproductive, contraceptive, and medical characteristics. The prevalence ranged from 39 per cent for breast swelling to 81 per cent for premenstrual weight gain. Socioeconomic status, race, history of benign breast disease, bra cup size, and history of abortions were some of the factors associated with premenstrual symptoms

  • Epidemiology of musculoskeletal impairments and associated disability

    L S Cunningham, Louella Cunningham et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1984•Cited by: 13•References: 3

Data from the US Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES I) of 1971-1975 confirm the high prevalence of musculoskeletal impairments among United States adults. Musculoskeletal impairments tend to be more prevalent among older persons, and persons with less education and with lower annual family incomes. Prevalence rates are slightly higher in females than in males, while Whites and non-Whites are affected with almost equal frequency. Among…

  • Response to typed and mimeographed letters in a survey using postal questionnaires

    Jennifer L Kelsey, R M Acheson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1971•References: 3

In epidemiological studies using postal question naires, a decision must be made as to whether the covering letter should be mimeographed or typed by hand. Considerable time and money are saved when mimeographed letters are used, yet it is generally assumed that hand typed and signed covering letters bring about a higher response rate. During the course of an epidemiological study of slipped capital femoral epiphysis a comparison was made of resp…
