  • Recovery Capital and Subsequent Overdose Risk and Addiction Treatment Engagement Among Emergency Department Patients at High Risk of Opioid Overdose

Laura C Chambers, Ralph Welwean et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

BACKGROUND: Emergency department (ED) visits are an opportunity to provide prevention services to people at high risk of overdose. Considering patients' resources to initiate and sustain recovery ("recovery capital") may be useful for tailoring ED services, although its relevance in this population is unknown. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from ED patients at high risk of opioid overdose enrolled in a randomized controlled trial in R…

  • How do US orthopaedic surgeons view placebo-controlled surgical trials? A pilot online survey study

Michael H Bernstein, Maayan Rosenfield et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medical Ethics•2024

Randomised placebo-controlled trials (RPCTs) are the gold standard for evaluating novel treatments. However, this design is rarely used in the context of orthopaedic interventions where participants are assigned to a real or placebo surgery. The present study examines attitudes towards RPCTs for orthopaedic surgery among 687 orthopaedic surgeons across the USA. When presented with a vignette describing an RPCT for orthopaedic surgery, 52.3% of pa…

  • Post-traumatic stress and future substance use outcomes

    Open Access•Henri M Garrison‐Desany, Jacquelyn L Meyers et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

PTSD symptoms were highly associated with tobacco and alcohol use, while the association with prospective cannabis use is not clear. Findings suggest that understanding the different risk stratification that occurs can aid in tailoring interventions to populations at greatest risk to best mitigate the comorbidity between PTSD symptoms and future substance use outcomes. We demonstrate that this is particularly salient for tobacco use and, to some …

  • Longitudinal associations between five factor model and impulsive personality traits and PTSD symptoms

    Open Access•Courtland S Hyatt, Preethi J Reddi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2024•References: 57

  • Statewide Policy to Increase Provision of Take-Home Naloxone at Emergency Department Visits for Opioid Overdose, Rhode Island, 2018‒2019

Jennifer A Griffith, Jennifer Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2023•References: 6

In 2017, Rhode Island responded to rising overdose deaths by establishing statewide emergency department (ED) treatment standards for opioid overdose and opioid use disorder. One requirement of the policy is that providers prescribe or provide take-home naloxone to anyone presenting to EDs with opioid overdose. Among adults presenting to EDs with opioid overdose from 2018 to 2019, approximately half received take-home naloxone. Receipt of naloxon…
