  • The Relationship of Oral Health Literacy and Self-Efficacy With Oral Health Status and Dental Neglect

Jessica Y Lee, Kimon Divaris et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 57

Objectives. We examined the associations of oral health literacy (OHL) with oral health status (OHS) and dental neglect (DN), and we explored whether self-efficacy mediated or modified these associations. Methods. We used interview data collected from 1280 female clients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children from 2007 to 2009 as part of the Carolina Oral Health Literacy Project. We measured OHL with a valid…

  • Oral health literacy levels among a low-income WIC population

Open Access•Jessica Y Lee, Kimon Divaris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2011

Differences in OHL levels between racial groups persisted after adjusting for education and sociodemographic characteristics

  • Impact of Poor Oral Health on Children's School Attendance and Performance

Stephanie L Jackson, William F Vann et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Cited by: 18•References: 20

Objectives. We examined school days missed for routine dental care versus dental pain or infection to determine the relationship between children's oral health status and school attendance and performance. Methods. We used 2008 data from the North Carolina Child Health Assessment and Monitoring Program. The study sample, weighted to reflect the state's population, included 2183 schoolchildren. Variables assessed included school absences and perfo…

  • The UNC-CH MCH Leadership Training Consortium

Open Access•Janice Dodds, Janice M Dodds et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2009

  • Comparison of Treatment Result and Compliance between Private Practice Medicaid and Non‐Medicaid Orthodontic Patients – A Brief Communication

Open Access•Steven P Dickens, Steven Dickens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2008

Treatment result and compliance for orthodontic Medicaid patients were assessed and compared to non-Medicaid patients of similar initial severity. All 55 North Carolina practices providing orthodontic treatment covered by Medicaid were asked to submit their last five Medicaid cases and five non-Medicaid cases of similar initial treatment complexity Nine practices agreed to participate. Initial models, final models, and progress notes were obtaine…

  • Children's School Performance

Open Access•Stephanie L Blumenshine, William F Vann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2008

Our results show that children who have both poor oral health and general health are more likely to have poor school performance. Our findings suggest that the improvement of children's oral health may be a vehicle to improve their educational experience

  • Evaluation of a Word Recognition Instrument to Test Health Literacy in Dentistry

Open Access•Julia Richman, Julia A Richman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2007

REALD-99 has promise for measuring dental health literacy because it demonstrated good reliability and is quick and easy to administer. Additional studies are needed to examine the validity of REALD-99 using objective clinical oral health measures and more proximal outcomes such as behavior and compliance to specific health instructions

  • Development and Testing of the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Dentistry (TOFHLiD)

Open Access•Debra A Gong, Jessica Y Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2007

TOFHLiD demonstrates good convergent validity but only moderate ability to discriminate between dental and medical health literacy. Its predictive validity is only partially established, and internal consistency just meets the threshold for acceptability. Results provide solid support for more research, but not widespread use in clinical or public health practice

  • Assessing Cost-Effectiveness of Sealant Placement in Children

Open Access•Rocio B Quinonez, Rocio Quinonez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2005

This study provides evidence that sealing children's first permanent molars can improve outcomes and save money by delaying or avoiding invasive treatment and the destructive cycle of caries. In a time of limited funds for dental services, these results can assist payers in establishing more rational sealant reimbursement policies

  • The Effects of the Women, Infants, and Children's Supplemental Food Program on Dentally Related Medicaid Expenditures

Open Access•Jessica Y Lee, R Gary Rozier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2004

The WIC program has the potential for decreasing dentally related costs to the Medicaid program, while increasing use of dental services

  • Effects of WIC Participation on Children’s Use of Oral Health Services

Jessica Y Lee, R Gary Rozier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 14

Objectives. We estimated the effects of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) on dental services use by Medicaid children in North Carolina. Methods. We used linked Medicaid claims and enrollment files, WIC files, and the area resource file to compare dental services use for children enrolled in WIC with those not enrolled. We used multivariate models that controlled for child clustering and employed 2-…
