    Open Access•Michael Axenhus, Sophia Schedin‐Weiss et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a reduction in the number of neurosurgical procedures performed in Sweden during 2020-2021, although not as much as in other European countries. • Prevalence of Chronic Diseases and Multimorbidity Among the Elderly Population in Sweden

Alessandra Marengoni, Bengt Winblad et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 8•References: 16

We explored the role of age, gender, and socioeconomic status in the occurrence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity in 1099 elderly participants in the Kungsholmen Project. Cardiovascular and mental diseases were the most common chronic disorders. Of the participants, 55% had multimorbidity. Advanced age, female gender, and lower education were independently associated with a more than 50% increased risk for multimorbidity. Multimorbidity is t…

  • Current Concepts in Mild Cognitive Impairment

Ronald C Petersen, Rachelle S Doody et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Neurology•2001

The field of aging and dementia is focusing on the characterization of the earliest stages of cognitive impairment. Recent research has identified a transitional state between the cognitive changes of normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Mild cognitive impairment refers to the clinical condition between normal aging and AD in which persons experience memory loss to a greater extent than one would ex…

Kjell Fahlander, Åke Wahlin et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The influence of cardiovascular signs (CVS) on cognitive performance was examined in 227 older adults not suffering from dementia between 75 and 96 years of age who were sampled from the community. Participants received a comprehensive physical examination that included specific evaluation of current CVS, including dyspnea, cardiac murmur, and edema in lower limbs. They were administered tests of digit span, episodic recall and recognition, verba…

  • Low blood pressure and five-year mortality in a Stockholm cohort of the very old

Zhenyu Guo, Matti Viitanen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•References: 31

OBJECTIVES: Low blood pressure has often been reported to be related to excess mortality in people over the age of 75 years. This study examined whether other predictors may account for the association. METHODS: A community-based cohort of 1810 people who were aged 75 years and older was followed for 5 years. RESULTS: The relative risk of death was 1.39 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.11, 1.73) for people with systolic pressure lower than 130 m…
