Risk factors for long Covid among participants of a population-based study in urban and rural Kenya, 2021
PCC were found in approximately one-fifth to one-third of participants with the presence of underlying medical conditions being a common risk factor in all outcomes. Advocacy for the prioritization of interventions such as vaccination of persons with underlying medical conditions could consequently result in a reduction in the risk of PCC
Estimating excess mortality during the Covid-19 pandemic from a population-based infectious disease surveillance in two diverse populations in Kenya, March 2020-December 2021
Robust data on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality in Africa are relatively scarce. Using data from two well-characterized populations in Kenya we aimed to estimate excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The mortality data arise from an ongoing population-based infectious disease surveillance (PBIDS) platform, which has been operational since 2006 in rural western Kenya (Asembo, Siaya County) and an urban informal sett…
Evaluation of the collaborative integrated surveillance system (ViCo) in Guatemala: A qualitative study on lessons learned and future perspectives
Stakeholders perceived ViCo to be useful. They recommended measures to improve system performance and quality, including simplifying the surveillance system, routine data analysis and feedback, and channeling efforts towards integrating surveillance data into the national health information system. To create a well-performing surveillance system and achieve the intended objective of surveillance for public health action, ongoing evaluation and as…
Operational research within a Global Fund supported tuberculosis project in India: Why, how and its contribution towards change in policy and practice
BACKGROUND: The Global Fund encourages operational research (OR) in all its grants; however very few reports describe this aspect. In India, Project Axshya was supported by a Global Fund grant to improve the reach and visibility of the government Tuberculosis (TB) services among marginalised and vulnerable communities. OR was incorporated to build research capacity of professionals working with the national TB programme and to generate evidence t…
Sex, Drugs (Methamphetamines), and the Internet: Increasing Syphilis Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in California, 2004–2008
Objectives. We examined primary and secondary syphilis cases among men who have sex with men (MSM) in California, and the association of methamphetamine use and Internet use to meet sex partners (Internet use) with number of sex partners. Methods. We analyzed California surveillance data for MSM who were diagnosed with syphilis between 2004 and 2008, to assess differences in the mean number of sex partners by methamphetamine use and mutually excl…
